November 2012 Papal Intentions

I found the image on the internet, (http://hicatholicmom.blogspot.com/)but will gladly give credit.

November 2012

General Intention: Ministers of the Gospel. That bishops, priests, and all ministers of the Gospel may bear the courageous witness of fidelity to the crucified and risen Lord.

Missionary Intention: Pilgrim Church. That the pilgrim Church on earth may shine as a light to the nations.

November 1, 2012 With Blessed Father Alberione and with Father Tom

November: the month of All Souls

Thursday, November 1
ALL SAINTS
First Thursday of the month--the Angel Guardians
Rev. 7: 2-4, 9-14
1 Jn 3: 1-3
Mt 5: 1-12

MONTHLY INTENTION

That priesthood candidates and candidates to the consecrated life may love the word of God, make it a part of their stages of formation, learn to understand it, live it and announce it.

From Father Tom: The Bible--once described as "the best-seller that nobody reads" --is a vital part of our Pauline life, but it needs footnotes or a good commentary to ensure we understand it.  At least let's make St. Paul essential reading!

Please Pray for Our Deceased: Sr. Giuseppina Cosner SGBP (1978)-- Sr. M. Stefana Freddi PD (1980)-- Fr. Angelo Aroldi IJP (1988)-- Fr. Giuseppe Buttiglione IJP (1991)-- Sr. M. Giuseppina Pormalejo FSP (1999)

Wednesday, October 31
OF THE DAY
Eph 6: 1-9
Lk 13: 22-30

Having faith means that the light of God becomes our light, the wisdom of God becomes our wisdom:  His mind is our mind and His wisdom our wisdom (BM 195).

True... as long as we are talking about faith and not simply knowing  or guessing or surmising. Do we believe in the Eucharist as the Body and Blood of Christ?  Judging by their attitude, lots of people just know  if even that.).  And too many don't seem to care.

OF THE DAY
Eph 5: 21-33
Lk 13: 18-21

The apostolate of example is obligatory not only because we're to live well, but because our life must be an open book for others. (VMC 1168).

From Father Tom: How am I doing on this point?  How are you?  Unless we live in the Sahara desert we are always impressing someone, favorably or unfavorably. It is an aspect of our exam that we don't always remember.

OF THE DAY
Eph 4: 32-5:8
Lk 13: 10-17

When one becomes blind and hard of heart, he believes himself to be smarter than others and despises them (RSP 418/9).

From Father Tom: Very true.  And perhaps this explains in part why we have problems finding new people. Hard of heart? Maybe not.  Blind?  Unfortunately, yes. The HFI has possibilities none of us has understood yet.  Let's be faithful to it...and forceful in promoting it.

Jer 31: 7-9
Heb 5: 1-6
Mk 10: 46-52

If we ant to help souls, to give them the Divine Master, then we must first possess Him-- nobody can give what he or she has not got (VMC 1163).

From Father Tom: This seems so obvious, doesn't it?  And yet we "count our chickens" (= external results) with marked satisfaction but don't always ask ourselves how we rate vis a vis the Master.

Eph 4: 7-16
Lk 13: 1-9

The saint is not a spineless, irresponsible person, unable to assume his role in life.  St. Paul sees holiness as characteristic of the perfect human being come to full maturity. (SP, Sept 1954).

From Father Tom: This does not mean that we are obviously superior to others.  The essential superior to others.  The essential is that we have developed our gifts to the maximum of our abilities. How we rate vis a vis others is not an issue.  How do you rate yourself?

Spiritual life precedes activity:  take Jesus' gifts and give them to others, take from heaven and give to earth (1158).

We save more souls with patience than with action  Jesus saved us by the Cross (VMC 1156).

From Father Tom:  The Founder here is probably talking about the patience needed to suffer well--in various senses.  But he would also underline action. To put it in Latin: action and passio. We need both.

The Pauline Brother makes reparation by his prayer and by his activity (VMC 1145).

From Father Tom: The two-fold reparation is the duty of all of us, regardless of our place in the Family.  And we do not repair "in general" but in particular, with reference to people we will encounter in eternity. Once way to repair is through limitation of our use of the media.

The secular Press! Its millions of readers...the movies with millions of viewers...how many souls are lost, how many young lives destroyed! (VMC 1142).

From Father Tom: That was in October '52.  In October of  (20)12 these media are already old...and far more effective ones are now doing the same deadly work.  How important is the Pauline apostolate plus prayer and sacrifice aimed precisely at these evils!

Heb 5: 14-16
Mk 10:35-45

Our word can be dead--if there is no divine grace to enliven it (VMC 1131).

From Father Tom: Do I have to make this point again?  I have made it again...and again.. and again. When our work is enlivened by grace obtained by prayer it will do good in some way according to the Divine design. If there is no prayer...in vain do we count the external "results."  On earth, maybe. In heaven..."??

Eph 1: 15-23
Lk 12: 8-12

Prayer is recommended more than 500 times in Sacred Scripture (VMC 1130).

From Father Tom:  OK.  Why not try writing the sort of comment you'd expect from me here.

My Comment (as per Fr. Tom): Sometimes it's hard to remember that it isn't the amount of prayer or the length of prayer, but the focus and attention we give to it that is important.  It is a conversation between us and God. We must talk to, not at, God and then try to listen to His response.

The fruit of our work does not depend on us, but on grace. To pray(er) must precede, accompany and follow our activity (VMC 1127).

From Father Tom: And wold it not be equally correct to say that activity must precede, accompany and follow our prayer?  every day we pray and every day we look around, we make phone calls, we write letters or email, we request promotion pieces and choose good people to send them to.  Will I EVER see the day when ALL OF US pray and  work for new people?

The problem of vocation is the principal problem for everyone (VMC 1116).

From Father Tom: We're not talking here any longer about "vocations" but about how each of us responds to the call of God to spend a life this way or that way. What a difference when a person doesn't just drift, but has a clear and worthwhile goal!

Urgent Prayer Request 10-6-12

Today I need to ask for many prayers.  The spiritual director of one of my daughter's best friends has disappeared in Greece and cannot be found.  The family fears the worst.  You can find more information here: http://www.fox59.com/news/wxin-family-fears-missing-indiana-priest-in-danger-possibly-dead-in-greece-20121003,0,6660559.column

Your prayers will be much appreciated by the priest and his translator (who is also missing), by his family and everyone involved.

Thank you in advance.  May God bless you abundantly for all you do.

Inconsistency in one's actions, acting at random according to whim, a useless life, happens when we forget our destiny (BM p. 38).

From Father Tom: Certainly HFI People need never act in an inconsistent way:  they have a clear destiny, a clear way to get there and the helps to have recourse to.  Blessed are they!

October 4, 2012 With Blessed Father Alberione and With Father Tom

Thursday, October 4
ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI
First Thursday of the month--the Guardian Angels
Jb 19: 21-27
Mt 11: 25-25-30

Blessed are the souls who give all...for ALL.  St. Francis and St. Clare acted that way and...how many souls followed them! (SP Oct 1936).

From Father Tom:  "Give all"?  It's different for each of us and difficult for everyone.  But it's the real "secret of success."  The more we give... the more we GET.  What we give is short-term anyway. What we get is eternal.  So easy to understand, no?  So HARD to practice!

OF THE DAY
First Wednesday of the month--St. Joseph
Jb 9: 1-12, 14-16
Lk 9: 57-62

Jesus does not accept just any person who wants to follow Him.  The Lord wants souls that are generous, ready for every sacrifice (UPS 1, 216).

From Father Tom: What is our basic motivation?  It should be to serve the Lord's interests, not our own.  When we think first of the Master's interests, then we approach possible candidates courageously even if we feel complete dopes for doing so.  Let's be fools for Christ's sake!

THE HOLY GUARDIAN ANGELS
First Tuesday of the month--The Souls in Purgatory
Jb 3: 1-23
Mt 18: 1-5, 10

Life is for heaven. Up there the Angels await us. Blessed are we if we shall have been faithful to their inspirations (RSP p. 256).

From Father Tom: And our brothers and sisters who were once with us also await us.  What will we do in heaven.  Mostly I think we see God as He is and burst into a song of praise that need never end.  After that...your guess is as good as mine.  So let's work hard now to ensure ourselves front-row seats!
