Papal Intentions April 2013

APRIL
Liturgy, Source of Life. That the public, prayerful celebration of faith may give life to the faithful.
Mission Churches. That mission churches may be signs and instruments of hope and resurrection.
April is the Month of the Blessed Sacrament

Monday, April 1
WITHIN THE EASTER OCTAVE
First Monday of the month--St. Paul
Acts 2: 14-32
Mt. 28: 8-15

That our new Administration may never forget to respect the religious freedom of all citizens.  This must be the ongoing prayer of all of us.

From Father Tom: And perhaps it is not beside the point to note that Catholics should continue to respect their Catholic faith!  Such is the lukewarm commitment of too many of us that we are not sure what we want respected!

Please Pray for Our Deceased: Fr. Carlo Stella SSP (1973)-- Bro Enrico Pantaleo SSP (1984)-- Fr. Michele Leone IJP (2003)

CHRIST HAS RISEN! ALLELUIA!

Happy Easter!

Sunday, March 31
EASTER SUNDAY
Acts 10: 37-43
Col 3: 1-4
Lk 24: 1-12

The angel told women to announce to the apostles that Jesus had risen. Jesus Christ entrusted the same mission to Mary Magdalen.  This indicates that women have an important role in society (BM  335).

From Father Tom: Our holy Founder was no Feminist, but--well ahead of his time-he understood the role of women in society and in the Church.

HOLY SATURDAY
Readings at choice of Celebrant

During the Vigil the triumph of Jesus Christ is announced.  "I make all things new!"  We must try to do the same: no matter how bad the "old" looks, the Lord always looks great and so can we!

From Father Tom: What can I add to this?  In WORDS, nothing.  In DEEDS... plenty of room for improvement!

Relations among Paulines must find their inspiration in fraternal and sisterly love but in a more perfect degree than in the natural family (UPS 4 218).

From Father Tom: This should not be difficult--after all, we are not waiting for a family inheritance or the departure of a family member to leave more room in the home for us, or in competition with a family member for jobs or otherwise!

Blindness of the mind and hardness of the heart are the greatest humiliations (BM 280).

From Father Tom: Indeed. What is more embarassing than hanging onto an opinion everyone else sees as false?  What is more lowering than a refusal to pardon even a repentant individual?

Sin does not give us peace--Judas was more disturbed than ever when he held on tightly to the purse containing the thirty pieces of silver (RSP p. 127)

From Father Tom: But it is possible to make peace with sin and that is extremely dangerous. How can we determine to abandon sin if we have convinced ourselves that it doesn't exist in our lives?  How many misguided people in our time have made just this gross mistake!

The predominant passion presents sometimes presents itself under an attractive guise--Judas presented himself as a lover of charity (RSP 332).

From Father Tom: Exam: what is My predominant passion.  Do I know it?  Does it sometimes follow this comment and disguise itself as an act of virtue?  Lord, that I may see!

To the drama of the Passion, all contributed: Jesus paid the price for our impurity, for the manifest injustice that condemned Him and still exists and for the cruelty so obvious in today's torn world (BM 587).

From Father Tom: Where will it all end?  Will any nation, even the strongest, be able to protect its borders indefinitely? Jesus, Master, grant at least some sanity to our insane world!

We lose time when we don't work for heaven, but only for earthly profit (BM 41).

From Father Tom: However this statement must not be taken to refer either to any of us or, indeed to anyone we know.  These days "earthly profits" are scarcely a common motivation--rather earthly survival!

The most beautiful ornament of a church is that there be good people in it, persons who stay there with great love (R.S.P.).

From Father Tom: Of course this is possible for us only to a certain extent--we've got homes and  family to look after.  The ideal is to leave God in the home and find Him again in the church and to leave God in the church and find Him again in the home.

The more a soul has dispositions of love and humility the more she is used by God for great things and raised to great perfection (BM 668).

From Father Tom: True, but not necessarily visible great things. The drawback to visible greatness is that almost inevitably the soul begins to muse on the part she played--forgetting that the ability to play is God's gift, the possibility of playing is God's gift and the results are mostly God's gift.  "What have you that you have not received?" Let prayer come before everything else and, above all, let it be the life of everything (SP, Aug 20, 1937).

From Father Tom: We must take this rule seriously,k not so much reading from the Prayer Book (thought not neglecting it either), but making our day an on-going recitation of invocations, a frequent brief stop to say "Hi" to Jesus and making sure that prayer get precedence in our schedule. Try this consistently and you'll notice the difference.

St. Joseph is called "righteous" meaning he is endowed with all the virtues (BM 668/0)/

From Father Tom: We way: it was easy for him: he lived with Jesus and Mary.  But..so do we if we really try to remember that the Master lives in us and with us if we do not cast Him out.  And where Jesus is, Mary is not far away.

Souls are attracted by goodness, patience, persuasion.  This is the way to do them good (BM 279).

From Father Tom: Undoubtedly.  Truly hardened souls are rare.  More common are the cynical type who see religion and morality and the Church as something to be treated with contempt. Perhaps these need a little more firmness...what do you think?

The Christian who is only half a Christian is disgusting to the heart of Jesus (BM 347).

From Father Tom: Strong words even  if Fr. Alberione wrote them.  I would be more inclined to say: "disheartening" or "dismaying" -- words to indicate not the Master's anger, but His infinite sadness.  The Lord is not looking on coldly while we go wrong, but it is anxious to see us get back to Him again and resume our friendship.

Jerusalem was dead to the loving invitations of Jesus. Some have ears but do not hear.  Some can talk...but fail to pray (BM 630-31).

From Father Tom: Which is unfortunate because simple prayer is nothing more than a loving conversation with the Master on whatever may be the problem of the moment.  He is always living in us and with us, anxious to strengthen, to clarity or to confirm our views.

Jesus was a victim of the truth as His followers were and as the martyrs of all times have bee (RSP 115).

From Father Tom: Nothing seems of less value today than truth in human relations. A few months ago we were bombarded with TV advertising containing such contradictory statements that neither of them could have been true!  What happened to "Thou shalt to bear false witness?"

The Lord gives with joy. It satisfies a need of His being.  Goodness by its nature spreads out (BM 635).

From Father Tom: It would be great if we could "give with joy". But that's for the Lord and perhaps a few blessed human beings.  The rest of us will learn to give bu an act of the will -- which is actually more meritorious.

From Father Tom: And they are two qualities or virtues conspicuously lacking in today's society and today's Church.  Purity?  What's that?  Humility? No room for humility in the widespread yearning to find the new money-making idea--"widespread yearning"? Shouldn't we say "Mad race"?

Ex 3: 1-8
1 Cor 10: 1-12
Lk 13: 1-9

The Divine Master will appear at the end of the world in the splendor of His mission and glory--and all of us will be there at the judgment (BM 680).

From Father Tom: How will he appear to ME when I stand before Him after death?  Important thought.

Saturday, March 2
LENTEN WEEKDAY
First Saturday of the month-- Mary Queen of Apostles
Mi 7: 14-20
Lk 15: 1-32

I shall often put the goodness of God and my sinfulness face to face and shall ask the Master pardon for the sin that has made Him suffer so much (BM 339).

From Father Tom: I can do that any time--not just in Lent.  On the one hand, avoid pessimism when we look at the past, on the other hand avoid undue optimism about the present:  we are not yet at the end of the road and the occasional robber may get us.
