MONTHLY INTENTION FOR THE JESUS PRIEST INSTITUTE

So that with his eyes on Jesus Master, every priest may direct his ministry to the service of faith and the Good News.

From Father Tom: We can add, to telling it like it is, too many new doctrines these days are doing for those who preach them and those who practice them.

Zs 8: 1-8
Lk 9: 46-50

The Holy Spirit, giver of life to the Church, gives faith to individuals and peoples and also gives hope and charity to hearts (Mihi vivere Christus est, 145)

From Father Tom: We reflect too rarely on the gifts of the Holy Spirit and on His importance in our lives. And yet it was He Who visibly inaugurated the Church on the First Pentecost Sunday, not Jesus. "Come, Holy Spirit...fill our hearts and minds with Your gifts and inspire us to use them for ourselves and for all those we meet."

The yearning of Jesus is that there be one Fold under one Shepherd. His thirst for souls is incessant. He wants all of us to be saved(BM 177).

From Father Tom: And that is what each of us should desire both for our brothers and sisters in the Institute and for those we contact through our apostolate.

Being redeemed by the blood of Jesus, all people are on a common journey toward the Father's house (BM 168).

From Father Tom: True. But the problem is to keep this truth firmly before our eyes. Even we consecrated people are easily blinded by some secondary person or event and so much precious time is lost.

The world lacks its true wealth: Jesus Christ. All should be of God, everything directed to a better life for the individual and for society (SP May, 49).

From Father Tom: Which of us would challenge this statement? None of us. And yet we are still too preoccupied with every possible question except this one:  how to make the Lord increasingly present in our own lives and in the lives of others.

All of us have the duty of charity toward others and all of us can do something: apostolate of prayer, of good example, or suffering, of works, of publications (BM 181).

From Father Tom: Why do we put "publications" (the essential work of the Pauline Family) last? Because without the others it remains "sound and fury, signifying nothers" (Shakespeare)

Hello, everyone,

I'm back from retreat and hope to get back on schedule now.

OF THE DAY
Ezr 9: 5-9
Lk 9: 1-6

While on Earth, Jesus had those who admired Him and others who had the opposite attitude. So also the Church, on its way through history (BM 543).

From Father Tom: We should determine as soon as possible that our attitude toward the Church and her ministers will be eminently positive, not being alarmed by human weakness or blindness defects.

Please pray for Our Deceased: Maria Concetta Citarda IAM (1974)-- Sr. Rosa M. Onofre FSP (1989) Sr. M. Giovanna Nicosia FSP (1993)--Sr. Emiliana Miserere (1997)

Tuesday, September 24
25th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Ezr 6: 7-20
Lk 8: 19-21

People owe each other mutual love, respect and collaboration (BM 168).

From Father Tom: How then explain the messed-up situation of our world? Very simple. Satan has taken over a large slice of man kind and is creating havoc where there should be "respect and collaboration. "only the presence of the Evil One can explain certain situations. Let's make sure that the good qualities listed shine forth from our lives.

Hello, everyone,

I'm sorry for the mega-post, but I'm going to be on retreat and didn't want to miss any days.

God bless...

Monday, September 23
ST PIO OF PIETRALCINA, priest
Ezr 1: 1-6
Lk 8: 16-18

All people are substantially equal in race, civilization and in their spiritual and immortal souls (BM 168).

From Father Tom: This is true even of exceptional human beings called to an exceptional vocation. Incidentally-to change the subject-the booklet highlighting the meeting between Fr. Pio and Fr. Alberione is available on request--it goes very well in our little shrine here.

Am 8: 4-7
1 Tm 2: 1-8
Lk 16: -13

Truth and grace were in Christ--"full of grace and truth." Truth and grace are still the life of the Church (FdA 146).

From Father Tom: "Truth and grace..." The comment here would need to be far longer but perhaps we can sum up the meaning by describing "Truth" as the practice of living coherently what we are called to be, and "Grace" as the divine incentive to continue living that way.

Eph 4: 1-13
Mt 9: 9-13

St. Matthew is one of only four people in the entire history of humanity called on to sketch the main teachings of the Master(BM 1).

From Father Tom: And called for a life as a public sinner--in the eyes of the Jews -- to a life of sanctity and service! Only God can be this forgiving.

Every pain confided to Jesus becomes light. If accepted from His hands it ceases to be a cross (BM 536).

From Father Tom: It is actually an honor to be invited to suffer like the Master. On the other hand, we have the old Latin tag: : mens sana in corpore sano-a healthy mind in a health y body. We always need to ask why we are suffering as well as how.

EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS
Nm 21: 4-9
Jn 3: 13-17

One who loves Jesus crucified acquires a great desire to resemble Him (BM 349).

From Father Tom: However, the imposition of severe penances should always be cleaerd with the confessor or spiritual adviser. Suffering in itself is an evil and should be borne patiently rather than seeking to add to it. Jesus enjoyed 30+ years of perfect health before Calvary.

1 Tim 1: 1-14
Lk 6: 39-42

A noble and great work is to pray and suffer for society and for the salvation of all people (BM 300-301).

From Father Tom: Do we do this? I am not so sure that I do myself--a sense of futility can crush anybody. And there is also the question: who exactly am I praying for? And I have to answer: the person or persons the Master assigned to me when I joined the Society (even if I never learn who they are). Same for you. There are no "people in general" --always specific people.

Among the last words of Jesus to His apostles at the Last Supper was: “Love one another.” Love of the truth, for the truth and in this truth is the first and most sanctifying. And He appealed to His Father: “Sanctifying them in truth.”

In our case the truth is our Pauline prayers and practices and the theory that underlies our work in the Church. WE are for sure not a major group of consecrated people so we have to accept our prayers and practices as being the real reason we do any good I the Church.

From Father Tom: Exactly. And so, what do I intend to do TODAY to continue on the road to heaven.

Love of the truth, for the truth and in the truth is the first and most sanctifying love. "Sanctify them in truth" was the Master's prayer as He went out to die for all of us. (SP January, 1955).

From Father Tom: True. But it is also costly at least from time to time. Facing up to the truth about ourselves has to be one of the great fruits of this year's Triduum. Perpetual Profession means we do BETTER than we did before making it-don't add to your responsibility, dear members.

We have a mission and one day the Master will invite us to give an account of how we have accomplished it--or not accomplished it (RSP p. 149).

From Father Tom: The quotes so far have been largely on the same lines and so also the commentary. So as we move on to the Triduum, we have to look back--we just HAVE to!--and answer honestly the basic question: am I better off now (spiritually)than I was four years ago?

Holiness consists in carrying out the will of God as we see it, depending on one's state in life, on the work done and on the other circumstances (BM P. 179).

From Father Tom: That seems very self-evident, doesn't it? Yes, it does, but also rather unattractive. Don't we all want our sanctity to be seen in remarkable accomplishments, in popular acclaim, in personal satisfaction as we move gloriously through life? So...when are we going to think straight?

From Father Tom: As soon as God is left out of our calculations--or perhaps has never been a significant part of them--there is at best a tremendous waste of precious time as we follow one false lead after another, never consulting the One Who alone know who we really are and what we should be really doing.

September 2013 Papal Intentions

Hello, everyone, here are the Holy Father's Monthly Intentions for September 2013. God bless!

SEPTEMBER

Value of Silence. That people today, often overwhelmed by noise, may rediscover the value of silence and listen to the voice of God and their brothers and sisters.

Persecuted Christians. That Christians suffering persecution in many parts of the world may by their witness be prophets of Christ's love.

MONTHLY INTENTION

For the Institute of St. Gabriel the Archangel so that in today's world all its members may feel called to share with others the truth the Master has left us.

From Father Tom: And what an important truth that is! Was there ever a time in world history marked by as much falsehood as our is? We hear much about the terrible physical suffering of the planet, but that will end with death while the suffering following from falsehood will only increase
