OF THE DAY
First Tuesday of the Month--The Souls in Purgatory
Ez 47: 1-9, 12
Ps 46: 2-3, 5-6, 8-9
Jn 5: 1-16

The new life means to establish our life in Christ--or the life of Christ in us (FSP 55).
From Father Tom: This "life of Christ" is--when we think of it--the only REAL life there is. What we call "human life" is simply deferred death and often welcomed. Risen with Jesus after the Last Judgment we will really enjoy life for the first time--no disease, no death, no end!

LENTEN WEEKDAY
Is 65: 17-21
Ps 30:2, 4-6, 11-13
Jn 4: 43-54

On the point of leaving His disciples, Jesus entrusted to them the ministry of the Word: "God into the whole world and preach the Gospel to every creature." (BM 329)

From Father Tom: That's the basic apostolate of every Priest, of every Brother, and of every Sister. If in some way we are doing that, we're part of the Lord's life and work, not necessarily through the media but through whatever God-inspired service.

Ps 23: 1-6
Eph 5: 8-14
Jn 9: 1-41

Traditionally know as "Laetare" Sunday from the Latin liturgy and the general felling that Lent is coming to an end.

From Father Tom: And as usual, we have to ask ourselves if we notice any difference in our prayer, in our behavior, and in our practice of the Institute recommendations.

LENTEN WEEKDAY
Hos 6: 1-6
Ps 51: 3-4, 18-21
Lk 18: 9-14

Mary assists, enlightens and comforts priests. She makes their apostolate fruitful. She gives them help and consolation (RDA 228).

From Father Tom: Undoubtedly, but we priests have to be aware not just of Mary's attitude toward us but of what should be our attitude toward her: Rosary, perhaps also True Devotion consecration: a longtime Pauline practice beginning with our Founder.

Mk 12: 28-34

One who must preach to others, whether by voice or by some instrument, must make himself the Pope's loudspeaker (FSP 176).

From Father Tom: The Founder's comment, given many years ago, underlines our duty and our attitude in this day and age: We stay with the Holy Father who leads the Church as the Lord wishes even though not every Church person entirely agrees with him.

From Father Tom: Query: How would you describe yourself? As one of these or as an interested onlooker wondering what will come from Canfield this month? But doing nothing to promote the Institute?

Blessed are you, Jesus, well aware as you are of the many human weaknesses and, for this reason, instituted the sacrament of Penance (FSP 55)

From Father Tom: And blessed are all of us if we take advantage of the Lord's mercy. That is precisely the problem in our time and one more reason why we need to take advantage of it ourselves.

Ps 40: 7-11
Heb 10: 4-10
Lk 1: 26-38

Let the apostolate be an exercise of charity and a work of mercy (RP 15)

From Father Tom: Perhaps we tend to think of our apostolate as a work of enlightenment of orientation. And it is. Indeed, far more so than material charity which helps the body but does little to help the mind and conscience.

Make reparation for the sins committed through the Press, Radio, Movies and TV--they are the most numerous, the most serious and the most scandalous (NOV 1950)

From Father Tom: This thought hardly needs a commentary but certainly I and all of us must ask if we spend precious time following the latest (unhelpful, unedigying) news and not enough spreading the Good News.

Ex 17: 3-7
Ps 95: 1-2, 6-9
Rom 5: 1-2, 5-8
Jn 4: 5-42

"He is risen! He is not here anymore." Very true...but, then where is He? In Church? Yes, but as the Blessed Sacrament. In our homes--would that He were! In our place of work? Perhaps. So...where? a) in my heart and yours and b) thereafter in the hearts of those we meet and inflame.

From Father Tom: Does this thought need a commentary?

LENTEN WEEKDAY
Mt 7: 14-15, 18-20
Ps 103: 1-4,9-12
Lk 15: 1-3, 11-32

Christ has to rise in our hearts, around His own splendid life within us as He did to so many when He rose from the dead (FSP 55).

From Father Tom: This, however, does not happen automatically. The baptismal grace has to be recognized and stirred into action, first by a good examination of conscience (What more could I do?) and then by action--try finding a new member or at least introducing the concept. We are a group of active apostles, not a prayer group.

By means of the cross, souls receive the life of grace, the Church receives power and every blessing descends on humanity (BM 385).

From Father Tom: This has to be true also of our individual crosses patiently borne in union with the Crucified One. This is the value of suffering and especially suffering in loneliness. On the Cross, Jesus was quite alone apart from his Mother, some pious women and St. John.

Jesus made as his faithful followers in His apostolic trips some virtuous women. Among them were the mothers of the apostles, who were themselves apostles (BM 335)

From Father Tom: This is an interesting insight from our holy Founder--he lived in a strictly "men only" apostolic atmosphere but he was from the beginning open to other possibilities.

St. Joseph teaches us to use work as an instrument of redemption, expiation and sanctification. Work is the body's prayer. It puts our whole self at the service of God (Calendario Paolino, May 1).

From Father Tom: And so the lack of work, such a painful feature of our time, is more harmful than we know. The older saying is still relevant: "The devil always finds work for idle hands to do."

By means of the cross, souls receive the life of grace, the Church receives power and every blessing descends on humanity (BM 385).

From Father Tom: This is true also when talking about our personal crosses. Suffering in itself was never God's first thought--how on earth could it be--would He not have been highly sadistic? Instead He accepted the suffering but personally led the way in showing us how to approach it.

From Father Tom: The Eucharist is the very center and reason for all apostolic activity. It is the Master, really present in His people, sustaining them and indicating what to do. To see it as just one of the Seven Sacraments is to miss the fundamental meaning.

When God calls, everyone must leave what he prefers--even contemplation-and run to the battles of God (BM 306).

From Father Tom: As the years pass, obedience becomes more and more difficult and we are better-educated and generally smarter than the individual given the title "superior". The superior, on the other hand, has to bear patiently a great deal of resistance, not to talk of abuse. Both superior and inferior need plenty of virtue.

Work is the body's prayer and it is indispensable because we have to put our whole selves at the service of God (Calendario Paolino, 1959)

The incarnate Son of God was tempted, therefore temptation is no disgrace for anybody, but is, on the contrary, a means of winning a higher place in heaven (BM 307).

From Father Tom: This assumes that we avoid the persons, places or things which past experience shows to have been occasions of temptation, not only against chastity but also against obedience and poverty which in general we may not take seriously enough.

The glory of Solomon spread to far countries but such greatness made him forget the Lord and his law (LS 104).

From Father Tom: Nothing new, really. Our world today is full of "Solomons: desperate about their world-wide fame, yearning for the roar of the crowd, torn with envy and jealousy...and even we people can be trapped into this dreadful mistake. Ask yourself today: How exactly do I measure my work for the Church? Numbers reached?

FIRST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH--THE SOULS IN PURGATORY
ST CASMIR
OF THE DAY
1 Pt 1: 10-16
Ps 98: 1-4
Mk 10: 28-31

If our soul is found to be totally pure, it will quickly enter Paradise: to see God, to love God, to enjoy God (BM 57).

From Father Tom: The idea of "enjoying" God is not all that easy to grasp-we have spent so much time in church and outside it "obeying" rather than "enjoying". So perhaps the best thing is to leave God to worry about what it means!

FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH--ST PAUL
ST KATHARINE DREXEL, VIRGIN
1 Pt 1: 3-9
Ps 111: 1-2, 5-6, 9-10
Mk 10: 17-27

May the fear of God convert those who need it, as it has themany who then distinguished themselves for holiness (NOV 122).

From Father Tom: Do we have any of those converts among our members? Why not? The mercy of God is greater than our misdeeds and He has a specific plan for each of us--a plan which we appreciate all the more when we realized how different things might have been.

There is so much to fear for certain souls who are stubborn in evil and end up falling into eternal punishment (NOV 239).

From Father Tom: Certain souls? Meaning "occasional"? And who are they? Do you know many who qualify? Quite a problem, isn't it?
