FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH-
ST PAUL
ST. JUSTIN, MARTYR
Tb 1: 3; 2-8
Ps 112: 1-6
Mk 12: 1-12

MONTHLY INTENTION

For Humanity: "The joys and the hopes, the sorrows and the anxieties of the men of today, of the poor above all and of all those who suffer are also the joys and the hopes, the sorrows and the anxieties of the disciples of Christ, and there is nothing genuinely human that does not find an echo in their heart" (Gaudium et Specs 1).May the light of Jesus Christ give(s) us light; may the power of the Father strengthen and support us, and may the infusion of the Holy Spirit console and sanctify us (SP Apr 1952).

From Father Tom: To a world somewhat in awe of the Church and perhaps finding it unfeeling, the final magnificent Council statement in December, 1965, was aimed at setting forth the truth. Unfortunately it got lost in the whirlwind of good and not-so-good changes.

Ps 19: 8-11
Mk 11: 27-33

Mary, through her divine maternity, becomes part of the divine family, and thus contracts many and admirable relationships with the Persons of the Blessed Trinity. She becomes a daughter, sister and spouse of God.

From Father Tom: Very interesting comment. I can't say I ever thought of this relationship. Which proves you can teach and old dog new tricks!

The Our Father is the prayer commenting on the "Glory to God in the highest," in its first three statements, and on Peace on earth to men of good will," inits next four statements. It is the prayer that most resembles the Magnificat (RdA 1240).

From Father Tom: Perhaps you can take time to read the Magnificat and see the comparison.

The greatest glory of Mary is this: change big sinners into saints and apostles (RdA 177).

From Father Tom: Actually, there is sometimes only a small difference between the two--a bad upbringing, for example. With her motherly concern and endless awareness of reality, Mary can work wonders.

O Mary, continue from heaven your apostolate of giving Jesus , Way, Truth and Life to the world. Many nations are poor because they lack Jesus Christ. New generations are starting life's journey. The world will be saved if it welcomes Jesus.

From Father Tom: I think the meaning here is that the nations who do not follow Christian principles are poor in the sense of being devastated by war and famine. Same for us. A soul can also be devastated if it lacks the Lord's presence.

A saintly Father of the Church (St. Epifanius) says that Mary gave the Word of God to the world to be read. The press apostolate must start from this principle (RSP p. 535).

During the Council I heard it said: "Often those who used technical means to spread Christian teaching can be ruined and lose their spirit." So I examined my conscience: do our people in the bookstores and movie agencies have enough virtue?

From Father Tom: This is a very old quote going back to the days when people were leaving the ministry in droves. It is not a big issue in our time.

It is a great charity to preach the examples of Mary, especially to the young, who in their innocence, have open hearts and understand the goodness of Our Lady.

From Father Tom:  To grasp the examples of Mary, we need to read the Gospel that is not a common practice among today's young people. So tehre is a real problem without a real and practical solution.

Virtues increase in a soul in proportion can understand how Mary, "full of grace," reached the heights of virtue and holiness.

From Father Tom:  "Grace"--always difficult to explain. My own understanding is that it is the gracious presence of the Master in us, but not exactly because this "grace" is also a divine gift distinct from Him. We can talk about it but not understand it!

From Father Tom:  Still...if the "various little printing jobs" do God's work...they have their considerable value. Prayer as we print used to be the common practice and one hopes that it still is.

Pope Paul VI has said: "Through the Decree Inter Mirifica the Church manifests her ability to join the interior life and the exterior one, contemplation with action, prayer with the apostolate...The means of social communication are inserted as instrument and document in the exercise of the pastoral ministry and of the Catholic mission in the world (SP Sep/Dec 1964).

From Father Tom:  And so say all of us!

The instruments of social communication (Press, Cinema, Radio, TV, Discs and the like) are efficacious means to instruct not only individuals but all humanity (SP May-Aug 1965).

From Father Tom:  An important  qualification, however, is that little phrase: "if used well," and in the Pauline Family that means preceding, accompanying and following them with fervent prayer. Once that is done, we leave it to the Divine Master to use our incompetent (incompetence?).
