VIRGIN, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
ORDINARY WEEKDAY

Ps 19: 8-11
Lk 10: 1-12

MONTHLY INTENTION: For missionaries.

Animated by a living faith and by a firm hope, let the missionary be a man of prayer; let him be ardent through the spirit of virtue, of love, of self-control; let him learn to be content with the conduit in which he finds himself; let him always bear the death of Jesus in heart through the spirit of sacrifice: (Ad gentes, 25).

From Father Tom: As usual I fixate on prayer, without which the missionary may produce some effects but not results. And, come to think of it, have I myself produced results in this member or that…results, not mere information?

Keep your mission ever in mind, like a guiding star, the ideal of your life, the raison d'etre of your existence, the object of your accounting at the particular judgment. Think, live and work for it (SP Jan 1954)

From Father Tom: "...accounting at the particular judgment..." Isn't that a sobering thought? How do you think you'll do?

Where purity is greater, charity is also greater. Mary was entirely pure and full of divine charity (SM 451).

We cannot educate our young people in a way of life that is not the present one just as we have to do good to people living now and so we have to "bring out of our treasure, things new and old" (SP Feb 1950).

From Father Tom: Still true in theory. But in today's world what sort of people are we addressing? Even if they believe what we tell them... will they act on it? How will we tell them--through the print media which they no longer read or through the digital media which they quickly forget? Is there a solution?  Yes, the Mass, the Visit, personal prayer.

Young members have to learn the journey of life...adult members must conform to the Constitutions and those who are above them have to listen, serve, help and ask more advice (SP Mar 1957).
From Father Tom: Quite so. Even Jesus spent long hours in prayer and seeking His Father's directions. So much time can be wasted--sinfully on occasion--by rushing into decisions and actions which do no good to anyone.

The heart is a very noble human faculty—but dangerous. Even when we offer it to God, it remains open to affections (BM 246).

From Father Tom: True, but that’s not a reason for becoming unpleasant—Jesus seems to have shown His love freely and generously.

Jesus gave to women a characteristic faculty: to have a keen and loving concern for the infinity of little details which fill our lives (CISP p. 1262)

From Father Tom: We call this her motherly concern and when it remains even in celibates it is very impressive.

A pure soul is a soul that has received an undefinable series of graces, since the struggle to keep purity is always the most difficult one (APD 1956, 87).

From Father Tom: Yes, but—to repeat an old thought—we mustn’t be “as pure as angels but as proud as devils!” This was an accusation frequently leveled in the past against some Sisters who—it was said—simply substituted one defect with another one.

From Father Tom: A brief exam usually sows us that we are not quite as we should be on all these points. So each of us has to ask: on which one am I failing the most and what do I need to correct? That thought should accompany us to the end of our days.

Suffering is not only a test: it is an apostolate. It is a secret of joy. It is sharing in the redemptive work of the Savior (FSP p 228).

From Father Tom: Indeed…but if we suffer with a little less “joy” that is not surprising or even a defect. The important thing is to keep in mind the words “apostolate” and “redemptive work.”

From Father Tom: Well...yes. But also... no, or maybe perhaps. A life, Religious or otherwise which never knows a moment of relaxation is destined to snap, either physically or psychologically. From Father Tom: Members occasionally ask me: Is it OK if we make the True Consecration of Grignon de Montfort?  Yes, absolutely. The Founder made it and so have thousands of other Paulines. Our sister, Sue Burrell, of ___________, will be happy to recommend a book to prepare you for making it.

A young person formed in righteousness and justice with profound convictions and with a true and upright conscience will be blessed by God, will enjoy many good successes and will be loved by men (SP Jan 1950).

From Father Tom: Indeed, but the individuals who combine these virtues are by no means guaranteed "to enjoy many good successes" in today's cut-throat world. Rather the opposite: they may be trampled on. The powers that be, are all in a sense, against them.

In their mutual affection and full collaboration, parents support each other in their trials and sacrifices and give to their children a physically sound formation and a religious education, a materially and spiritually good position (BM 170).

From Father Tom: Not sure about the meaning of that lasat phrase--it seems to say that the children of this sort of training will be sound members of socity. Whatever it means, there is too little of it these days.

I did not believe that it was so easy to become a saint (Ven. Andrea M. Borello).

From Father Tom: Ven. Borello--as I mentioned already- was the Alba shoe repairer in the early days--you might say he sanctified his soul on the soles of his confreres...

The secret of the Pastorelle Sisters is that joy that comes from God, our eternal joy (Alla sorgente, p 35).

From Father Tom: This is our secret also, but more than "joy" which can also be founded on an exaggerated self-appraisal. Let's be content with a general thankfulness to God for His many gifts.

ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Col 1: 1-8
Ps 52: 10-11
Lk 4: 38-44

Normally, human beings start their lives in a family, live it in a family and there also conclude it. The greatest merits are acquired mainly with the family (BM p. 170)

From Father Tom: How this thoughts resonates with me after my HFI experience! Of course the major merits flow from family like where there is less prayer perhaps but a lot more suffering. The Divine Master spent 30 years in the family atmosphere--and he surely knew what He was doing

Please Pray for Our Deceased: Fr. Gabriele Costs SSP (1949)--Fr. Giovanni Roatta SSP (1985)--Luigia Bosio HFI (1986)--Fr. Luigi Vidano SSP (1993)--Sr. M.
