ST JOSEPH
ST JUSTIN, MARTYR
ORDINARY TIME
2 Tm 1: 1-3, 6-12
Ps 123: 1-2
Mk 12: 18-27

MONTHLY INTENTIONS: So that all pastors and their cooperators and especially parents and teachers may be holy, full of wisdom and zeal for the glory of God and the salvation of people (LdP p. 42)

FROM FATHER TOM: Indeed, but the problem today is that pastors, parents and teachers are so harried and challenged that they may be glad just to get the essentials done even if they don't quite measure up to Fr. Alberione's standards.

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR DECEASED: Sr. M Spes Marengo PD (1958)--Sr. Giuditta Pagliana FSP (1995)--Fr. Stefano Lamera SSP (1997)--Fr. May 31, 2016 With Blessed Father Alberione and with Father Tom

TUESDAY, MAY 31
VISITATION OF THE
BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
Zep 3: 14-18
Is 12: 2-6
Lk 1: 39-56

It is good to renew often our consecration to Mary, putting ourselves in the number of those whom this Mother nourishes, instructs, forms, assists and sanctifies (SP Oct 1938).

FROM FATHER TOM: October 1938! And what a difference between the Church then and The Church in 2016! Consecration to Mary?In a day and age when Catholics for whom He shed the last drop of His precious blood, no longer even frequent the churches where His Sacrifice is represented, no longer admit their sins, desecrate the Sacrament of Matrimony, and seem quite unconcerned. What a victory for Satan!

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR DECEASED: Sr. Margherita Imparato PD (1963)--Sr. M. Luisa Laurenti FSP (1967)--Sr. M. Vittorina Vellone PD (1976) Fr. Giovanni E. Robaldo SSP (1997)--Sr. M. 1 Pt 1: 2-7
Ps 91: 1-2
Mk 12: 1-12

Your mission is a mission of joy (Alle sorgente p. 35).

FROM FATHER TOM: Another one-liner which, however, makes us reflect.  Joy in our apostolate only too readily becomes pride. And if pride is our motive--or competition which is another form of the same sin--there is every reason to be sober.

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR DECEASED: Sr. Lorenzina Ligari FSP (1935)--Sr. M. Alessandrina Migliardi FSP (1973)--Fr. Aldo Varaldo SSP (1997)--Sr. M. Pacis Ferrero PD (2000)--Sr. M. Lk 9: 11-17

Perfect devotion to Mary consists in thinking like her.

FROM FATHER TOM: And need we add, speaking like her and acting like her. But what does that mean? Perhaps we can find an answer as we reflect on the quiet ladies all of us have met in our lifetime. They had about them a serenity and a calm that sometimes, perhaps angered us, but yet led us to wish, that we were like them.

Frequency in visiting Jesus in the holy Tabernacle prepares that eternal dwelling with Him which is beatitude (BM p. 380).

FROM FATHER TOM: I have written of Fr. Alberione previously in this context: slowly and reverently, head habitually bowed, he entered the church.  Painfully, he tried to kneel. Gently he entered the pew, bowed his head...and all was silence.

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR DECEASED: Sr. Sofia Jimenez FSP (1998)--Sr. M. Beatrice Dante PD (2004)--Rosanna Paoloni HFI (2007)--Sr. M. Ecclesia Gastaldo PD (2009)--Fr. Vincenzo Rossi IJP (2009)

Those who know more, obey more (LA 136).

FROM FATHER TOM: Fr. Alberione never heard the term "one-liner" but it is not difficult to find in his writings and recordings some statements sufficient for many much longer meditations. He is talking about divine inspiration, of course, not human cleverness.

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR DECEASED: Fr. Giovanni Casuccio IJP (1982)--Fr. Felice Carosso SSP (1985)--Antonio Pigiona HFI (1985)--Sr. M. Joyful faith! The example, the teaching and the patronage of our Father, St. Paul, are (for) us at all times light, guidance and comfort. Always under the mantle of Mary (SP May 1947)

FROM FATHER TOM: What an interesting relationship the Paul/Mary one: fiery zeal and heroic gentleness, burning eloquence and saintly silence, outgoing personality, a life lost in contemplation! We need them both!

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR DECEASED: Cleric Artemio Valenti SSP (1935)--Sr. Crocifissa Benvenuti FSP (1961)--Sr. M. Agata Rizzo PD (1964)--M. Teresa Alcibar HFI (1989)--Sr Angela M. Everyone who has developed a taste for reading St. Paul has become a sturdy soul. (SP 414).

FROM FATHER TOM: Sturdy, but also we might say adventurous, ready to improve his or her personal living with the aid of our holy Patron. How well Fr. Alberione chose when he took this firebrand as the exemplar of whom and how we should be and live.

We know that spiritual tendencies and carnal tendencies exist, so we have to guide ourselves through a firm discipline and with the help of grace (MCS p. 477).

FROM FATHER TOM: The grace is always there, at our disposal. The "firm discipline," on the other hand, may be just a bit beyond our reach. Lord have mercy on us. Christ have mercy on us!

Let us make of ourselves the pen and tongue of God, through Jesus Christ, our Master (CISP 33)

FROM FATHER TOM: The words are typical of a frequent Fr. Alberione recommendation. The "pen"--that's relatively easy; we can all write good advice. The "tongue"? Always saying the right thing to the current person at the right time and in the right way...Help!

The apostle is a Christ’s cooperator and works for the salvation of others by informing them of the great blessings of faith, holiness and charity (SP Feb 1953).

FROM FATHER TOM: This is especially true for us in the media. But the challenge always is to LIVE WHAT WE TEACH: otherwise, we are simply so many hypocrites.

Poverty in an institute guarantees good spirit and good development especially admirable and numerous vocations (UPS 1, 452).

FROM FATHER TOM: Poverty for us is observed not so much in daily living as in our annual vacation—if we take it.  It is easy to follow the ads; and, if we have the resources, to head off to a Sandals vacation.

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR DECEASED: None given—please pray for all the deceased.

Love that does not lead to sacrifice is a deception, pure sentimentality. The example of true love is Jesus who immolated Himself (FSP 41, p. 280).

FROM FATHER TOM: This is true of our recent situation. However, Jesus intended to begin His work peacefully, converting the religious leaders. Unfortunately, they treated Him with hatred and brought about His passion and death.

There is the apostolate of humility, of suffering and of work. In the Lord's eyes those who ray are good; those who work, better; those who suffer, best (FSP 32, p. 456).

FROM FATHER TOM: It is easy to grasp the value of prayer and suffering, but...humility? Perhaps it is because we seldom encounter genuine examples of this central virtue.

It's Penecost

Veni, Sante Spiritus

Come, Holy Spirit, come!
And from Your celestial home
Shed a ray of light Divine!

Come, Father of the poor!
Come, source of all our store!
Come, within our bosoms shine.

You, of comforters the best;
You, the soul’s most welcome guest’
Sweet refreshment here below;

In our labor, rest most sweet;
Grateful coolness in the heat;
Solace in the midst of woe.

O most blessed Light Divine
Shine within these hearts of Yours,
And our inmost being fill!

Where You are not, we have naught,
Nothing good in deed or thought,
Nothing free from taint of ill.

Heal our wounds, our strength renew;
On our dryness pour Your dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray.

On the faithful, who adore
And confess You, evermore
In Your sevenfold gifts descend;

Give them virtue’s sure reward;
Give them Your salvation, Lord;
Give them joys that never end. Amen.
Alleluia

FROM FATHER TOM: "...the salvation of men" ...it's an old-fashioned way  of putting the thought, but actually its more than old-fashioned...it's inaccurate. These days we might say women are more in need of assistance...men in the nude are not often seen, women...far too often and too harmfully.

FROM FATHER TOM: It is remarkable how easily w silence our conscience: "It's only a venial sin..."  "Others are far worse." "Everybody's doing it."  "You don't know what to believe." And so on until, almost inevitably, we commit a serious sin.

FROM FATHER TOM: If, of course, we have easy access to a church or chapel. If not, we can substitute by being a little more silent,a little more gentle, a little more, a little more forgiving of ourselves and others. Union with the Lord is not limited to the physical.

Dialogue With Christ

"Consider taking the time to dialogue with Christ through prayer.  As part of your prayer, read the Scripture and then close your eyes and allow the Spirit to slowly seep into your being like a gentle rainfall nourishing the earth."

Perfect devotion to Mary consists in thinking like her, desiring what she desires, willing what she wills, working with her, in a word: being entirely hers(BM p. 404).

FROM FATHER TOM: Of course. But we should not give up the effort even if we seem to fall short of this standard. Isn't the love of a good mother even more intense when she sees we need her more?

Each soul has its own story, its own difficulties, its own graces, its own life certifications (MCS p. 149).

FROM FATHER TOM: And, we may confidently add: its own special care on the part of God's love and mercy. We take our Catholic religion with its range of helps to salvation too much for granted forgetting the millions living in darkness and in the shadow of death.
