SATURDAY, AUGUST 1
FIRST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH-
MARY QUEEN OF APOSTLES
ST ALPHONSUS LIGUORI, BISHOP, DOCTOR
OF THE CHURCH
Lv 25: 1; 8-17
Ps 67: 2-8
Mt: 14: 1-12

MONTHLY INTENTION:

For the Christian Laity: "A perfect model of such a spiritual and apostolic life is the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the Apostles. While he lived on earth a life common to all, full of family and work concerns, she was always closely united with her Son." (Apostolicam Actuositatem 4).

From Father Tom: In the Pauline Family we take a slightly different view, calling her "Queen," not, however, in the sense that she is distant from our life experience but that she exercises all the virtues of someone of high station.

Please Pray for Our Deceased:  Sr. M Antonietta Marello PD (1958)--Sr. Alessandrina Mirto PD (1976)--Sr. M. Giacoma Collotto PD (1981)--Bro Gianfmco Patella SSP (1984)--Sr. M. Mt: 13: 54-58

St. Ignatius desires that the entire edifice of sanctification be built on this truth: I have been created for Paradise (BM p 394).

From Father Tom: Try saying this to the millions of Catholics today--ex and non-ex. Would it not seem the semi-incoherent mutterings of your dear old great-grandmother? Or--victory of the media--does she even think of it any longer?

After miraculously satisfying 5000 with five loaves of bread, Jesus spoke of the Eucharist, bread from heaven. If we want to win souls, let us think about bodies...it is difficult to talk about the Eucharist to someone whose stomach is empty.

From Father Tom: Surely a unique thought from Fr. Alberione! It may be from one of the books he wrote, giving general advice and not directly to Paulines.

Feel with the Church, love the Church, cooperate with the Church, with her most holy, devoted and operative members (UPS IV 116).

From Father Tom: Perhaps the most useful comment on this straight-forward recommendation is that UPS is not the firm we all know, but the general title of talks the Founder gave in 1960 when he built the Retreat House in Ariccia and invited the Founding members in the various nations to a month of spiritual exercises.

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration is the first and basic of the Sister Disciples of the Divine Master. It constitutes the source and root of their activity, be it prayer and liturgical service (SP Sept/Oct/Nov 1969).

From Father Tom: Eucharistic Adoration is not-strictly-speaking an obligation for us because for some it would be impossible. However, we can always practice invocations in thanksgiving for or in preparation for the next time we will receive the Eucharist sacramentally.

The presence and the activity of the Church have a beneficial influence, even in the social and cultural field. Adhesion to the See of Peter means love for truth, for justice, for peace, for progress (SP May-Jun 1952)

From Father Tom: This is universally true: all the great social works, all the Catholic hospitals, all the concern for the outcasts, the sick and the dying can be traced back to Christian beliefs and practice.

It is easy to read in the books the phrase: "Go to Joseph"
(Gn 41, 55). That Joseph who stood out in Egypt as a provider during the years of famine is a figure of Joseph in the New Testament, the putative father of Jesus Christ: the provider (FSP 55, p. 86).

Read well the life of St. Paul: our father will point out the right way for us. What he has done is good also for us.

From Father Tom: What did St. Paul do? a) He converted from everything he held dear: accepting that the Law was not everything; b) he bore patiently the failures of his converts; he died a martyr. We can always practice a) and b)

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Ez 2: 2-5
Ps 123: 1-4
2 Cor 12: 7-10
Mk 6: 1-6

Man's life is a battle, not against his brothers, but against evil and against our passions (RSP p 328).

From Father Tom: Undoubtedly. But it is normally our brothers who rub us the wrong way and so test what self-control we have.

SATURDAY, JULY 4
FIRST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH-
MARY QUEEN OF THE APOSTLES
ORDINARY WEEKDAY
BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
INDEPENDENCE DAY
Gn 27: 1-5, 15-29
Ps 135: 1-6
Mt 9: 14-17

Reading and meditation of the dogmatic Constitution De Ecclesia (the Church) makes it easy to understand the Church and her functions, her mission and life, which repeats the mandate of Jesus Christ (SP Nov 1965)

From Father Tom: In general we tend to neglect study--our generation grew up with the word of the pastor as all the study we needed. That is not enough in today's educated and hostile. READ AND MEDITATE.

FRIDAY, JULY 3
FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH-
THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS
ST THOMAS, APOSTLE
Gn 22: 1-19
Ps 115: 1-9
Mt 9: 1-8

Truth and grace were in Christ, "full of grace and truth," (Jn 14). Truth and grace are still the life of the Church and through them we walk in the steps of Jesus (RdA 146).

From Father Tom: Neither of these qualities is very evident in today's Church: truth certainly seems to depend on the last "expert" telling it like it should be (according to him or her) and there is not very much grace in the telling of either.

THURSDAY, JULY 2
FIRST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH-
THE HOLY GUARDIAN ANGELS
ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Gn 22: 1-19
Ps 115: 1-9
Mt 9: 1-8

The Church lives in time but is destined for eternity. Embattled and persecuted, she is always victorious. She is the mother of us, generating us to new life (BM pp. 171/172).

From Father Tom: That "generation us to new life," (Baptism) can no longer be taken for granted. And if we are not baptized it is hard to say what sort of future we have. Every day we must pray for the dying unprepared. Every hour/day approimately 140,000 souls face their God.
