OF THE DAY
1 Thes 4:  9-11
Mt 25: 14-30

Ask Mary to calm mistrust, hatred, violence and rivalry within families and between nations (SP December '53).

From Father Tom: What a crying need there is for the cessation of hatred and violence! And how hard Satan is working to ensure that it will get worse. Everyone recognizes the need for peace and forgiveness but...it seems so desperately difficult to  make a reality.

When a soul is filled with the Holy Spirit it has a way of acting, reasoning and behaving as it God were inspiring it (FSP 52 p. 391).

From Father Tom: Once in a while we come up against someone like this. They are just like us...but not quite. My own description would be that they always speak from a height: a different attitude, different principles, a different approach to life.

Sunday is the most suitable day for our spiritual work--not for sport. Let's make our Sundays holy (RSP p. 39).

From Father Tom: On the other hand, Sunday may be the only day members can visit friends and family--they are less concerned about sport or not concerned at all.  I guess each case is different and needs to be resolved differently.

The Anointing of the Sick is called the Sacrament of Hope. It infuses consolation and patience to bring about detachment from life and from the goods of the earth (BM 479).

From Father Tom: That was true when this anointing was truly the sign that life was over. Today it may simply be one more good moment--given every time there is a new illness or a new aspect of the illness we can lose our sense of exactly what is going on.

When we confess with humility, we become righteous persons determined to change our lives and well-prepared to perform our duties (RSP p 79).

From Father Tom: More than "humility" we may need a sense of purpose: these various confessions are not going to leave me unchanged; I have clarified my principal fault (or the most prominent of several) and I am continuing to work and THAT one.  And work o nit...and work on it...There is a real PURPOSE and GOAL in my confessions.

Talk and write about Mary, encourage others by your example to become more devoted to her (SP December 1953).

From Father Tom: Examination of conscience: have I spoken and written enough about her? Perhaps yes, but also perhaps no. There have been fairly frequent articles about Our Lady.Doubtless there could have been more. What about YOU? Daily Rosary and perhaps more than one? O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have insufficient recourse to you!

We priests complete our mission when, after having so many times offered the sacrifice of the Mass, we make the sacrifice of our life (APD 1958)

From Father Tom: But not when the doctor tell us we have six to nine months...too late! We should have prepared for the inevitable long, long, before that dreaded announcement. Members must pray more for our priests--we sympathize with their physical ills but too often forget their real problems.

We are born Christians (well, actually we are born pagans) but become Christians after Baptism. Later we become strong through Confirmation and the Eucharist (BM 413).

From Father Tom: True, but in almost every life, the Eucharist fails to produce its effect because it is too superficially made present and given by us priests and too superficially received by the rest. In practice therefore, I give and you receive a piece of bread.  Or, if not you, then a hundred thousand others.

The work of perfection involves a daily making and remaking of our mind, heart and will so as to become a complete person (Sacerdote, ecco la tua Meditazione).

From Father Tom: The meaning here seems to be that we are always less than we might be because some defect or weakness dogs us all through life. This however, should not harm our peace of mind. Perhaps we'll have a "death-bed conversion, meaning a special divine gift as we go into eternity.

QUEENSHIP OF MARY
Is 9: 1-6
Lk 1: 26-38

Every apostolate is a radiation of Jesus Christ giving something of His greatness.  Mary gives us the whole Christ, Way, Truth and Life. She is the apostle. (SP December)

From Father Tom: Mary gave the whole Christ to the world at his birth Bethlehem. The circumstances then were of the most humble and least dignified--and the choice of this situation was God's. To the extent that we are poor and humble, aware of our inadequacy, to that same extent we receive the Master to give Him to others.

True Catholics are not content with the ignorant enjoyment of their faith but rather study it, deepen their knowledge of it and become apostles of it among their neighbors (SP January, 55)

From Father Tom: The translation here is correct...but "ignorant" enjoyment? What the Founder possibly means is that we should not simply live our duties from Sunday to Sunday and with the awareness and understanding we had as children, but react to the modern challenges to the old beliefs and be prepared to defend and spread them.

Mind and heart need to go together: know the truth and then stir up the heart to be excited about it (SP January 1955).

From Father Tom: As the years pass, our original excitement about our vocation to HFI dies down--nothing new about that.  The remedy? We go back either mentally or by looking over our notes to remember how we used to feel. Or we ask the Delegate. Or we ask a member. Whatever the method, let's NEVER decide that we made a mistake. ST PETER JULIAN EYMARD, PRIEST
First Friday of the month—the Sacred Heart
Lv 25: 1-17
Mt 14: 1-12

The Eucharist is a major means if we are to make Christ come alive in us. I thank and bless you, O Divine Master and I want to lead a Eucharistic life (FSP 55, p. 220)

From Father Tom: Which means more than just receiving the Eucharist but requires a minimum of stops during the day to say “thank you”.
