June 30, 2016 With Blessed Father Alberione and With Father Tom

THURSDAY, JUNE 30
THE FIRST MARTYRS OF THE CHURCH
ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Am 7: 10-17
Ps 19: 8-11
Mt 9: 1-8

St. Paul is our father and from him we must take our spirit, our mentality, our love for Jesus Christ and soul (Vademecum 654).

FROM FATHER TOM: Spirit? Strong, confident, looking into the future. Mentality? Alert, confident, modern.

Love? Constant desire to show our intense interest in the welfare of others (e.g. Save the Dying unprepared).

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29
SS PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES
Acts: 12: 1-11
Ps 34: 2-9
2 Tm 4: 6-8, 17-18
Mt 16: 13-19

Move ahead with joy and confidence. You ware with the Church and operate in the Church and for the Church. You are with Jesus, the Good Shepherd, and you live under the guidance and light of Mary, Mother of the Good Shepherd (AAP 1959, 74).

FROM FATHER TOM: Is this true of us, doing our humble daily work at home or in the workplace? Of course. It just requires a little imagination to look to the Word of God in some form and in some part of the world being shared with individuals or groups. You are there! I am there! That's us operating with the Church, in the Church and for the Church!!

TUESDAY, JUNE 28
ST IRENAEUS, BISHOP, MARTYR
ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Am 3: 1-8, 4-11
Ps 5: 4-8
Mt 8: 23-27

Humility is our wealth. Pride is a disgraceful and unhappy situation. Strive always to be humble as was St. Peter and St. Paul, who carried out prestigious works and established the Church's foundations (AAP 164, 169).

FROM FATHER TOM: A useful thought here and always is that the first and most important--and most difficult--thing is to be humble. That's essential. What "prestigious works" we may be called on to do is something secondary. The natural inclination is to perform the "prestigious works" in the full glare of publicity and let the humility take care of itself.  And so there will be quite a few surprises in heaven!

ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Am 2: 6-10, 13-16
Ps 50: 16-23
Mt 8: 18-22

St. Paul achieved so much in the way of the apostolate because he subjected himself with devout humility to the will of God (Vita Pastorale, Apr 1951).

FROM FATHER TOM: That can be true also for you and me. The will of God for us is the Statute, and we should often re-read it to find things we have forgotten or never even noticed!

The joy of the spirit is reflected in all the aspects of being human: the mind oriented to truth, the will to what is good, the feelings to what is beautiful and joyful (Vita Pastorale, Nov 1952).

FROM FATHER TOM: This can be true even in the midst of somewhat severe  physical suffering; indeed, it may be the only support we have to counteract pain.

Let us open our eyes to see the splendor of light St. Paul transmits. He is a living and a blessed life, a light that is warm and life-generating. In fact, he is at the same time teaching and example, both in virtue and in the apostolate.

FROM FATHER TOM: And the beginning of this process is that you actually read what St. Paul has written and how he lived.  I have given a short course on his life and Letters...twice and put the series in book form.  Is it possible that some of us are still reading everything but his life and Letters?

Ps 139: 11-3, 13-15
Acts 13: 22-26
Lk 1: 15-20

Jesus said about John the Baptist: "He was a lamp burning and illuminating." We have first to burn and then to enlighten others--or even set them on fire (Vita Pastorale, Apr 1948).

FROM FATHER TOM: This can be quite a challenge, especially because we may be burned out personally before we have the possibility of helping others. If so, perhaps a little less fire with a little more faith is needed.

One enters Paradise either an innocent soul or a repentant one. After we have sinned, we enter as penitents (FSP 43, p. 429).

A Prayer for Forgiveness...

O Jesus, I forgive those in my lifetime who have hurt me or offended me, who have been thoughtless, ignorant or rude in their words or actions. I forgive them because I want your forgiveness for any time that I, too, have treated people like that, oftentimes without being aware of it.

O Mary, heal my heart a little at a time, make it less sensitive to my own problems and more sensitive to the problems of others, and let this be my special and all-important contribution to the sufferings of the world.

FROM FATHER TOM: Where we happen to be? Well, yes, but our Pauline apostolate gives us the wonderful blessings of being--so to speak--everywhere. Is a Pauline giving a good book to someone in Spain at this moment? Is so, with the proper dispositions, I am right there!

Making Our Devotionals PERSONAL

MAKING OUR DEVOTIONS PERSONAL

By now, every one of us (who are Paulines) should habitually address the Lord as "Jesus MASTER". It sets us apart as belonging not to one more spiritual group for the laity but to a UNIQUE  group. If you would like a clearer explanation on this point, kindly ask for the booklet GOD'S GIFT TO YOU.

But we can go even further and make EVERY prayer for others a "Pauline" one. For example, John is misbehaving and you pray for him saying:

"Jesus Master, the TRUTH, show John what to do
Jesus Master, the WAY, show John how to do it.
Jesus Master, the LIFE, give him the strength to do it."

or perhaps more frequently:

"Jesus Master, the TRUTH, show me what to do
Jesus Master, the WAY, show me how to do it.
Jesus Master, the LIFE, give me the strength to do it."

Incorporating the Pauline spirit in our everyday lives in this way will bring great satisfaction.

It shows practical love toward the Divine Master, the Church, and constant serene union with God (FSP 53, p 446).

St. Paul set everything in motion, enlightened everything and nourished everything. He was the guide, treasurer defender and supporter wherever the Pauline Family established itself (SP Jul-Aug 1954)

FROM FATHER TOM: I do not think I can make this claim as regards the Institute, but our great Patron may have been working quietly behind the scenes and doubtless, is working still.
