ALL SAINTS
First Saturday of the Month--Mary Queen of the Apostles
Rv &: 2-4, 9-14;
Ps 24: 1-6;
1 Jn 3: 1-3
Mt 5: 1-12

Let us bless Iraq and Iran in the respective stops. Let us recite a rosary for these souls, praying for the deceased and repairing for sins committed against Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth and the Life (SP May 1949)--During this month let us pray for our brothers and sisters of the Pauline family in Switzerland, Taiwan Tanzania, Thailand, and Ukraine.

From Father Tom: "The more things change, the more they remain the same." This is unfortunately true once again for those two martyred nations--in '61 as in '49. Let us pray by all means for the innocent sufferers but also for the many rushed into eternity without proper preparation.  "Eternal rest..."

May Jesus Christ our Divine Master, Who is Way, Truth and Life, be ever mpre intimately known by us and may He be formed fully in our minds, will and heart. Thus we shall become expert masters of souls, because previously we have been humble and diligent disciples of Christ (AD 98).

From Father Tom: Let us pray: Jesus  Master, the Way, help me ACT properl: Jesus Master, the Truth, help me THINK properl; Jesus Master, the Life, help me FEEL Your concerns.

OF THE DAY
Eph 6: 10-20
Ps 144: 1-2, 9-10
Lk 13: 31-35

In the morning let us sit by the feet of Divine Master and tell Him: :You are the Way, I want to follow Your steps, imitate Your examples. You are the Truth: enlighten me! You are the Life: give me Your grace!" (FSP, p. 303)

From Father Tom: It is important that we take time each morning to dialog with the Master--especially after Mass and Communion--in a filial way: Words of thanks as we look at the many graces (call them lucky breaks, if you like) we have received, at the progress we need in our own lives and then at the needs of others, be they the recipients of our apostolic endeavors, be they family members or others. Finally, we dialog with the Master about our own needs--always quite a few.

Zeal must be strong, because "one who does not burn cannot light a fire," St. Gregory the Great says. To burn only is no big deal, and likewise to shine only: the perfect thing is to burn and to shine (SM 404).

From Father Tom: Here Fr. Alberione quotes another dynamic saint-Gregory the Great-who requires us not to burn only but to burn and shine. It's a rare combination but when we find it in an individual such as the Founder and perhaps all of the early pioneers-things got done and thousands feel the benefit.

What are these lives which are neither of God nor of the world? A tepid person is not good either for himself or for others. And he is not good for himself and for God (APD 1963, 405).

From Father Tom: Tepidity...the bête noir of men like Fr. Alberione whose disposition what the very opposite. He had a cordial dislike of those he considered slackers--and his favorite praise was that someone "had worked enough for four."

"Docete omnes gentes-- Make disciples of all nations" with present day means: not the development of industry or business, but apostolate, following and giving Jesus Christ, Way, truth and Life (SP FEB 1950).

From Father Tom: The Founder rejects "industry and business" but yet there is a business element in all our apostolate; and if we neglect business criteria, we are liable to see the "apostolate" come to grief. Another Alberionian criterion is that the apostolate should pay for itself and support the apostles--a standard the SSP has not always reached.

Make known Jesus Christ "Way, Truth and LIfe": that is, Jesus Christ in so far as He has given us a very holy morality, revealed to us verhy sublime truths of faith, given us means of salvation that are the sacraments (RSP 237).

From Father Tom: Divine Master Day! He has given us a moral code (WAY), revealed sublime truths (TRUTH) and assists us by the Sacraments (LIFE). We are his joyful servants, teaching His truth in a certain way and using our life to show Hi our gratitude for having been called to serve Him.

The Institute must have a piety with a color that is precise and uniform everywhere; from the uniformity of that color come important consequences for the uniformity of the Pauline spirit, in thought, in sentiments, in the apostolate, in religious observance, in discipline and in studies themselves (SP Dec 1952, I).

From Father Tom: What prayers will we say? I already gave the answers: the old, traditional prayers such as the Angelus, the Rosary and the Stations, (these are in our larger Prayer Book which all of us should have); then Pauline prayers strictly speaking--in Prayer Booklet (basics). I stongly recommend that we confine our piety to these as-to quote the Founder-to give a Pauline "color" to our lives and piety.

OF THE DAY
Eph 4-1-6
Ps 24: 1-6
Lk 12: 54-59

The method "way, truth and life" is based on this basic principle: man must adhere to God completely, that is, with all his principal faculties: will, intellect and sentiment. In following this method, the apostle will find it easy to adhere completely to God and make himself, like Jesus Christ, Way, Truth and Life for souls (AE 39.46).

From Father Tom: Here is further insight on yesterday's quote. We must relate to God with our will, intellect and sentiment--but which is which? I would say the "will"=Way, meaning that we follow the Lord in a regular lifestlye; "Truth" refers to the content of what we teach, while "Life" is the emotional aspect of our relationship to the Master.

For our sanctity to be complete, it must lead us to follow Jesus integrally: in our way, in the truth, and in our life (Meditazione, 22Dec 1933).

From Father Tom: This seems a little complicated. I would see "way" as presumable referring to our activity; "truth" might refer to the accuracy of what we produce; while "life" probably refers to how we live. Maybe this is less complicated that I thought.

OF THE DAY
Eph 3:  2-12
(Ps)Is 12: 2-6
Lk 12: 39-48

Jesus Christ taught to not (to) wait for men, but to look for them. Like the Master, the apostle must disseminate the divine word in the cities, in the countries, in the houses, even the most remote ones. He must cross the mountains, sail the oceans, got to all men "ut luceat omnibus-to give light to all" (UPS IV 89).

From Father Tom: Each of us has to take this advice ot heart. We in the Religious Life have to ask ourselves: are we reaching out (at least in prayer) to the hundreds of thousands to be reached? Or are we simply living from day to day without the challenge--and the merit--of having to provide for a home and family? In the case of the HFI, the main failure may be not to reach out to others, likely or not, friendly or not. We have an account to render also in this context.

Eph 2:  12-22
Ps 85: 9-14
Lk 12: 35-38

If our apostolate will truly follow God, the Writer and Publisher, it will be truly fruitful and will have no end: vocations will multiply. Vocations follow us when they see us give men God's wisdom; they leave us when they don't see this. Let our daily yearning and prayer be to give God to men (RSP, p. 102)

From Father Tom: A rather sobering assessment by Fr. Alberione of how to make progress in vocations and in members. Perhaps however, this is one of those comments coming from the early days. Or is it? are we in the Pauline Family giving people "God's wisdom?" Surely we are. So why not more vocations? The only answer seems to be that our daily "yearning and prayer" are not as visible as they should be. What do you think?

Beato-Timoteo

Prayer for the Canonization of Blessed Joseph Timothy Giaccardo
Most Holy Trinity, you have given Blessed Timothy Giaccardo the gift of living the heroic path of  following Christ in the spirit of St. Paul the Apostle and under the gaze of Mary, Queen of Apostles.
You willed to unite him with the charism of Blessed James Alberione as his first priest and most faithful disciple.
I beg you to glorify him on earth by granting me the grace I now ask…
And you, Blessed Timothy, unite with my prayer your powerful intercession so that the instruments of social communication may always promote what is good and help in making Jesus Master, Way, Truth and Life known, loved and followed by all. Amen.

Feel the divine thirst for souls as Jesus Christ felt it. Make known the dogmatic, moral and liturgical doctrine of Jesus Christ, making use of the fastest and most fruitful means. Be progressive! And feel this progressiveness in Christ and in the Church (SP Apr 1949).

From Father Tom: I think we can fulfill the second and third counsel in this voice of the Founder, vis be progressive. Feel this progressiveness as part of the Church's mission. But...feel the divine thirst for souls...? That is a gift of the Master. On the other hand, we might feel a little less :divine: but hopefully still useful to souls if we continue our work day after day, "thirst" or not.

A Love Letter Written to Jesus After Reception of the Eucharist

Sacerdosalterchristus
(A love letter written to Jesus after the reception of the Eucharist)

O Sacrament Most Holy
O Sacrament Most Adorable
O Most Lovable, Most Loving Lord,
I love You not as You Deserve.
*
On my own, I am unable
To achieve such heights of Love.
O Love, O Loving One,
Most Adorable
And Most Gracious,
Grant me a portion of Your Love
To make my own
To then return to You.
*
Such Degradation I have not known,
Such that You have taken on,
First upon the Cross
For the sins of the unworthy,
Then daily upon the Altar
Within the Host
Within the Hearts
Of those still unworthy of Your Love.
*
May the Earth ring out.
May the Angels sing praise.
May my heart
And those of the faithful
And the unfaithful
Declare the Greatness
Of One so loving
So worthy
So under-appreciated by all.
*
Sweet Mother Mary,
Help me praise Him.
Dear Guardian Angel,
Help me to lift my whole heart
To declare love of Him
Who loves me so much.
O Saints of Heaven,
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Help me to show love of Him
By living His Love,
His Mercy,
His Joy,
In this, the life given to me.

TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Is 45: 1-6
Ps 96: 1-10
1 Thes 1: 1-5
Mt 22: 15-21

Master Giaccardo not only had a great heart, but also a broad mind. When he entered the Society of Saint Paul and to him was added as ordinary title that of "Master," he oriented himself toward the Divine Master and understood what role he had to fill; and he acomplished it faithfully (RSP, p 348).

From Father Tom: Blessed Giaccardo!  Like the moon and the sun, he rotates quietly through Pauline history and now in the glories of Paradise, always "No. 2". He was always obedient, always gentle and compassionate, quietly living heroically beside the Founder who confessed that at least on occasion he valued Giaccardo's views over his own. A great man, a wonderful example, a good friend from Paradise!

The religious life is the fruit of a more vivid faith, of a more firm hope and of a more ardent love (RSP p. 552).

From Father Tom: This seems obvious--why would the average person renounce the three great human rights (the reference is more to the Religious Life than to ours) if he or she did not have what the Founder lists: faith, to believe in God and what the Church teaches, hope to make a positive reality of the step and love which goes beyond the merely human. It has to be recognized that most Religious get by without this level of virtue but the Church still is grateful t them.

The first step so that Jesus Christ may live in us is to know and believe the total Christ as Way, Truth and Life (SP Jan 1963).

From Father Tom: The Founder speaks of the "first step" which most of us would see as the final one, e.g., to believe what we have read or studied about the Master. Perhaps he is referring to his own unrepeatable experience as a teenager when he was suffused by the Divine Light and remained in four hours in enjoyment of it, long before he had begun his studies.

Works are accomplished if there are persons; and these the more they produce if they are grafted in Christ (SP Jul 1957).

From Father Tom: We can hardly add anything to this straight forward statement except to not how relevant it is, even--and indeed especially--in our own time. Conviction about a need takes over the mind of a zealous person, and he or she just can't understand why others don't think on the same line.

Vocation requires inner sanctity and generosity. Is there generosity when we spend and over-spend ourselves? (RSP p 515)

From Father Tom: Rather unusual comment: "Is there generosity when we spend and overspend ourselves?" The answer would appear to be: why not? But perhaps the Founder has in mind some member who may spend or overspend himself or herself in order to shine before other members? Or before his/her friends outside the HFI? That, of course, would be very foolish, but-as the old saying goes--"There's one born every minute!"

Jesus, Divine Master, I thank you for the gift of Sacred Scripture. With Mary, I shall remember and preserve your words in my mind and I shall meditate on them in my heart (The prayers of the Pauline Family, p. 76).

From Father Tom: Sacred Scripture! How much depends on it! What would we know about the thousands of years that preceded the arrival of Jesus without it? What would we know about the Master personality and about His life and miracles without it? What would we know about St. Paul and his immortal letters if we did not have Sacred Scripture? and so... let us read it (preferably with some commentary) and thank the Master for His gifts!

Gal 4: 22-31

In Saint Paul we find the Disciple whose knowledge of the Divine Master is in its fullness. He lives all of Him. He fathoms the profound mysteries of His doctrine, of His Heart, of His Sanctity, of His Humanity and Divinity. Paul sees Christ as Teacher, Victim and Priest. He presents to us the whole Christ as he had already defined Himself; Way, Truth and Life (AD 159).

From Father Tom: It's not easy to add anything to this quote except to express the hope that all of us, following the series on St. Paul, will come to a better and even a substantially adequate understanding of the life and work of our holy Patron. If we learn more about him, we learn more about the Founder and to the great religious principles that underlay his work.

From Father Tom: Here we have somewhat the same idea as yesterday: "builds on the Gospel," meaning perhaps that our personal lives are founded on Gospel principles and, as a result, what we produce in the apostolate is a reflection of the Master's teaching--and the Master's presence--in our lives.

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
OF THE DAY
Gal 3: 22-29
Ps 105: 2-7
Lk 11: 27-28

Mary's conformity with the will of God was total (BM, p. 400).

From Father Tom: “Total” conformity to the will of God to the will of God. “Be it done to me according to your word…” a truly colossal reaction. With all others she longs for the coming of the Messiah or Liberator (though she does not know how this will happen), but when she is told that she is a key element in the process…her response is simply stunning

ST DENIS, BISHOP, MARTYR, AND HIS COMPANIONS; ST JOHN LEONARDI, PRIEST
OF THE DAY
Gal 3: 1-5
(Ps) Lk 1: 69-75
Lk 11: 5-13

If Jesus says: "Learn from me" and "I have given you an example," it is because He showed in Himself the perfection of the Father to whom to aspire; to live like Jesus Christ means to live in a way pleasing to the Father (SP Feb 1963).

From Father Tom:  This is a fairly straight-forward statement sa far as it goes, but obviously, it doesn't go far enough. We are not talking about imitating Jesus or playing Him as if we were actors. That's relatively easy. But our task is different: we must to the the best of our ability, try to reproduce in our lives, as we might say, His "style": calm, strong, fearless, generous, patient and sympathetic, to name just a few of His traits.

Wednesday, October 8
OF THE DAY
Gal 2: 1-2, 7-14
Ps 117: 1-2
Lk 11:1-4

What we mean by pastoral spirit is to communicate to people Jesus Christ as He defined Himself in summary: I am the Way, the Truth and the Life." It is to uplift and to sanctify the whole human being-mind, feelings and will-by way of dogma, morals and worship (UPS I, 376).

From Father Tom:  Here we have an outline of the principle underlying our mission in the Church. We are not communicating ideas or concepts or ideals. These good things will perhaps remind or enlighten people as to how they should live, but those hearing them will not change or will not change permanently if the Master is not present first of all in us "apostles."

OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY
FIRST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH: THE SOULS IN PURGATORY
Gal 1: 13-24
Ps 139: 1-15
Lk 1:26-38

The Sisters of Jesus the Good Shepherd, whose purpose, in accordance with their qualifications and conditions, is to cooperate with parish priests, bring the Pauline spirit in direct contact with souls and with the population (UPS I, 19).

From Father Tom:  We have spoken before of these Sisters of ours. The Founder is speaking in 1960, before the onrush of lay collaboration with pastors generally. Today their ministry will be one of parish coordination or perhaps education.

FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH: ST PAUL
Gal 1: 6-12
Ps 111: 1-2, 7-10
Lk 10:25-37

To have taken Saint Paul as your protector is not only because he has been a preacher or a writer, but because he is a soul transformed in Christ (APD 1966, 476)

From Father Tom:  St. Paul is " a soul transformed in Christ." I do hope that the re-run of the main events of his life begun last month will convince most of us that this is true. He needed it! The Mosaic Law was for the  Jews as the Church is for us today: the definitive rule. Paul had to preach that Jesus was the new "Rule" even though he had been put to death by the religious leaders...

Pray and Don't Worry

[Brothers and sisters:] “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you.”   ~Phil 4: 6-9

Today’s second reading really struck a chord with me. With all that’s going on in the world it is a timely reminder that we should pray and don’t worry, pray and act, pray and live without fear. If we fill ourselves with love and good things, there will be no room for fear and bad things. If we fill ourselves with God there will be no room for what can harm us and we will have peace of mind and heart.

Jesus, our Divine Master, have mercy on us, for we are sinners, but even as sinners we put our love and trust in You. Have mercy on us.  You are our strength, our shield, our light, our life, our inspiration and our salvation. Do not let fear or worldly cares drag us down or paralyze us.  Grant us Your peace, Your courage, Your Grace and Your perseverance.  Help us to remember, by ourselves we can do nothing, but with you we can do all things.

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
FIRST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH: THE  DIVINE MASTER, WAY, TRUTH AND LIFE
Is 5: 1-7
Ps 80: 9-20
Phil 4: 6-9
Mt 21: 33-43

The Eucharistic Visit is the practice which directs and influences our whole life and the apostolate the most. It is the great means to live the whole Jesus Christ. It is the secret of our transformation in Christ  (UPS II, 105).

From Father Tom:  Here we have the maximum commendation of the Visit. It influences our whole life and apostolate, is the secret of our transformation and of a successful apostolate. For Paulines generally it is a strict rule. For HFI people..."as possible."  The more often, the better.

ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI, RELIGIOUS
OF THE DAY
Jb 42: 1-6, 12-14
Ps 119: 66-75
Lk 10: 17-24

Feel ever more the doctrine of the Master, Way, Truth and Life. He is way in order to live; is truth so that we may believe what He has preached; is life, that is, grace in us (APD App. 35).

From Father Tom:  Here the Founder highlights the basic meaning of our devotion to Jesus, the Divine Master. Query: Am I cultivating this devotion at least by addressing the Lord, not just as "Jesus" but as "Jesus, Master" when I pray to Him? Am I cultivating strictly Pauline devotions and leaving aside all others, apart from traditional practices, e.g., the Rosary, the STations, the Angelus, etc.?

OF THE DAY
Jb 38: 1-12-21
Ps 139: 1-3, 7-14
Lk 10: 13-16

"FEEL WITH JESUS CHRIST"-- It means having the heart of hte Divine Master, as shown by "Venite ad me omnes--Come to me all of you." (AE 33).

From Father Tom:  Here the Founder sets a high standard: "feel" with Jesus...Let's think of moments of deep emotion in our lives--our first boyfriend or girlfriend, awaiting the results of our studies, being on the winning team...if we could just feel like that how much more would we do and how much more eagerly!

THE HOLY GUARDIAN ANGELS
FIRST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH: THE GUARDIAN ANGELS
OF THE DAY
Jb 9: 21-27
Ps 27: 7-14
Lk 18: 1-5, 10

Invoke the Guardian angels so that theyu may make us understand well what the apostolate means (RSP, p. 37).

From Father Tom:  understand our work in the Church...Not, therefore, the number of members or the quantity of the materials distributed--rather easy to calculate--but the sanctity of all of us involved with this process and the consequence success or failure of it. Apostolate does not mean "numbers contacted" but rather who contacted them and how.
