Love of the truth, for the truth and in the truth is the first and most sanctifying love. "Sanctify them in truth" was the Master's prayer as He went out to die for all of us. (SP January, 1955).

From Father Tom: True. But it is also costly at least from time to time. Facing up to the truth about ourselves has to be one of the great fruits of this year's Triduum. Perpetual Profession means we do BETTER than we did before making it-don't add to your responsibility, dear members.

We have a mission and one day the Master will invite us to give an account of how we have accomplished it--or not accomplished it (RSP p. 149).

From Father Tom: The quotes so far have been largely on the same lines and so also the commentary. So as we move on to the Triduum, we have to look back--we just HAVE to!--and answer honestly the basic question: am I better off now (spiritually)than I was four years ago?

Many things must be accepted patiently because they are independent of us--we cannot control them. Even in this situation, however, we can still observe the will of God and so become saints...(BM P. 179).

From Father Tom: We can indeed...as long as we don't want to become "saints"--to our great satisfaction--but merely struggle along quietly, hidden from others, and with a sense of being inadequate no matter what we do.

Holiness consists in carrying out the will of God as we see it, depending on one's state in life, on the work done and on the other circumstances (BM P. 179).

From Father Tom: That seems very self-evident, doesn't it? Yes, it does, but also rather unattractive. Don't we all want our sanctity to be seen in remarkable accomplishments, in popular acclaim, in personal satisfaction as we move gloriously through life? So...when are we going to think straight?

Human beings must make God a permanent part of their lives: their minds by means of a living faith; their wills by means of a virtuous life, their hearts by a supernatural sentiments (SP October 1952).

From Father Tom: As soon as God is left out of our calculations--or perhaps has never been a significant part of them--there is at best a tremendous waste of precious time as we follow one false lead after another, never consulting the One Who alone know who we really are and what we should be really doing.

From Father Tom: This applies also more broadly: parents who are the first teachers of their children. Those in public office for their constituents. All those who are in any way responsible for huan lives.
