MONTHLY INTENTION

For a greater real respect for the Holy Eucharist which we honor specially tomorrow.

From Father Tom: The holy Eucharist has been the object of both the greatest human honors and the greatest human disrespect.

THE VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
Rom 12: 9-16
Lk 1: 39-56

During my trips and while passing from House to HOuse I meditate frequently on the Second Joyful Mystery (SP Nov/Dec 532).

From Father Tom: Our Lady bears Jesus with Her--she is His first Tabernacle--and remarkable things happen in this great encounter. Is this not true also of us? If we possess the Lord and pray...and then speak and act, we have done all He wants us to do for those we meet.

We have to pray every day, every week, every month and every year. But always with the proviso: "YOUR will be done, not mine." (BM 503)

From Father Tom: This latter condition becomes clearer when we realize that the will of God is ALWAYS directed to our maximum profit and , if our prayer is not answered as WE want it...that simply means that we don't see straight (but God does!).

From Father Tom: Yes, but with qualification. The five thousand men made no preparation apart from a keep appetite. If we wish to receive the Eucharist just habitually and while making no effort to change our lives...rest assured that they will not change.

Jesus gives back a hundredfold the services that we give him as we serve our brothers and sisters (BM 211).

St. Paul was teacher of the Gentiles but the real doctor and teacher was Mary by reason of her unspeakable holiness and motherhood of the Savior (VMC 618).

From Father Tom: True, but how can we understand this? Example: the nuclear power station makes life better for millions while itself having no direct contact with them. The direct contacts come from the men who are actually install power in people's house (that would be the Paulines or other Church ministers).

The Gospel has intrinsic power.  Every time we read the Gospel we have the guarantee of good fruits (RSP 196).

From Father Tom: Not speaking in tongues? How disappointing! But what good would tongues do if we had no apostolic courage or ardent zeal? We have a tongue in our head already, but could use more courage and zeal--all of us could!

Pope Francis' Prayer to Mary

Yesterday the Holy Father lead a profession of Faith for all the Italian bishops as they are meeting in plenary session. He addressed them. At the end of the address, Francis pronounced a prayer to Mary which should move any but the coldest heart.

This isn’t Secretariat of State boilerplate. This is Francis.

Some context: Before this prayer, Francis had mentioned that the first faithful bishops have are their priests.  He spoke about obedience and self-emptying, the gift of self as what distinguishes pastoral ministry.  He mentions the Devil again, of course. He warns about the seduction of a career, money, laziness, being a functionary, worrying about structures more than people.  The whole thing bears reading.

Then, after saying “I place you, and I place myself, too, under the mantle of Mary, Our Mother”, he concluded with this!

Mother of the silence that preserves the mystery of God, deliver us from the idolatry of the present, to which those who forget are condemned. Purify the eyes of pastors with the balm of memory: that we might return to the freshness of the beginning, for a praying and penitent Church.

Mother of the beauty that blossoms from fidelity to daily work, remove us from the torpor of laziness, of pettiness, and defeatism. Cloak Pastors with that compassion that unifies and integrates: that we might discover the joy of a humble and fraternal servant Church.
Mother of the tenderness which enfolds in patience and mercy, help us burn away the sadness, impatience, and rigidity of those who have not known what it means to belong.
Intercede with your Son that our hands, our feet and our hearts may be swift: that we may build the Church with the truth in charity.

Mother, we will be the People of God, on pilgrimage towards the Kingdom. Amen.
Benedict has his voice. Francis has his.

First we take care of our souls, first the Kingdom of Tod and holiness.  At the same time, moderate care for our health: neither a sick body, nor a sick soul (if our fault) has any place in the Kingdom (BM 640).

From Father Tom: Ill health, if not our fault, can be very meritorious, combining suffering with the inability to serve the Lord as WE want. Better serve Him as HE wants.

Acts 16: 11-15
Jn 15: 26-16:4

Ask for sanctity, the grace to do the will of God. Let this be the central request of every prayer (RSP, 135).

From Father Tom: I mentioned already the close connection in Latin between sanctus and sanus "holy" and "healthy". There have been saints who destroyed their health or almost so, but that was an error. The Lord enjoyed robust health and yet He was Holiness itself. Perhaps the best sign of sanctity is normality.

The perfection of the heavenly Father is reflected in Jesus and so He is the Master of perfection. (APPD 73).

From Father Tom: What is this "perfection"? An oft-asked question. Perhaps the best answer is that as soon as you realize you are perfect...you're not! So maybe what is meant is sincerity in doing things as best you can--always.

EASTER WEEKDAY
First Saturday of the month--Mary, Queen of Apostles
Acts 16: 1-10
Jn 15: 18-21

"Mary looks at our hearts, whether it searches for God, is united to God and is detached from everything that displeases the Lord.  It is impossible to continual sin and true devotion of Mary." (BM 406)

From Father Tom: The practice of True Devotion to Mary has always been a typical Pauline characteristic--and the Founder led the way on this as on other practices.

May 3, 2013 With Blessed Father Alberione and With Father Tom

Friday, May 3
SS. PHILIP AND JAMES, Apostles
First Friday of the month--the Sacred Heart
1 Cor. 15: 1-8
Jn 14: 6-14

Until the end of the world it will always be the successor of Peter who will declare what is to be believed and what is the faith of the Church (BM 679)

From Father Tom: Did I already quote this famous saying of St. Augustine? "I'd prefer to go to Hell with the Pope than to Heaven without him." One of Augustine's one-liners that--as usual--condense an entire theology.

Please Pray for Our Deceased: Fr. Giuseppe Ronconi SSP (2006)--Marie Ducote Smelka (1995)--Joseph Mahoney--Winnie Williams--Darrell Locker (no years)

Thursday, May 2
ST. ATHANASIAS, Bishop, Doctor
First Thursday of the month--the Guardian Angels
Acts 15, 7-21
Jn 15: 9-11

Nobody must just stand idly by, observing.  The one who does this--judging others--is already at fault (RSP 42)

From Father Tom: The Founder was famously critical of those who proposed great schemes...for others to implement. DO SOMETHING was his constant refrain.
