THE FIRST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH--THE POOR SOULS IN PURGATORY
Am 3: 1-8; 4: 11-12
Ps 5: 4-8
Mt 8: 23-27

In some nation(s) with pain the papal flag is folded up and lowered down. Let the sons and daughters of Saint Paul lay it out, raise it and under its shadow fight the battle of (the) Lord (SP May-Jun 1952)

Let us pray for our brothers and sisters of the Pauline Family in Mexico, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Nigeria, New Zealand, Pakistan.

From Father Tom: This quote goes back to the fifties when both the Founder and his work were at the height of their success as I mentioned once already. It surely expresses the yearning of Bl. Alberione-or any other zealous apostle--but doubtless has to be seen also in the light of reality.

THE FIRST MARTYRS OF THE HOLY ROMAN CHURCH
Am 2: 6-16
Ps 50: 16-23
Mt 8: 18-22

Everyone must regard as father, teacher, exemplar and founder Saint Paul the Apostle alone. In fact he is such. Because of him the Pauline Family was born, was nourished and made to grow. From him she has received the spirit (AD 2)

From Father Tom: This quotation scarcely needs a commentary except perhaps to be filled with gratitude as we recall the tens of thousands who have heard of the Institute, but did not have the special grace to join it, while you have had this grace. St. Paul never forgot his powerful experience on the road to Damascus. What about reflecting today on your own "Damascus" experience and thanking the Master for it?

SS PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES
Acts 12: 1-11
Ps 34: 2-9
2 Tm 4: 6-8, 17-18
Mt 16: 13-19

Saints Peter and Paul arrived in Rome. The former appearing as a fisherman, the latter as a chained prisoner. But they had the mandate of the Word, Jesus the Way, Truth and Life in their souls, a single aim to win disciples for the Divine Master. And they gained Rome and the world (SP 1946).

From Father Tom: This was the day I was confirmed. Also the day, 20 years later, when we Deacons went on Retreat before Ordination. Do you always keep in mind, nostalgically and grateful(ly), the highlights of your meeting with the HFI and all that followed? It was the greatest thing that happened to you after Baptism and First Holy Communion. Reflect on it today and often in the future.

From the heart of Mary, as from an ardent thurible, a continuous incense of prayer was rising up to God (BM 378).

From Father Tom: Nice comparison here: a continuous incense of prayer rises up from the heart of Mary. We would not make such a claim, but hat does not mean that NO prayer we say has efficacy--visible results or not. The main thing is to pray ("like a devil" as the Italian joke goes!) and leave the results to Mary and her Son.

THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS
Dt 7: 6-11
Ps 103: 1-10
1 Jn 4: 7-16
Mt 11: 25-30

After hearing the voice of Jesus, Saint Paul made an effort to copy in everything his Divine Master, such that Saint John Chrysostom did not hesitate to affirm that "the heart of Paul was the heart of Christ," that is, the life itself of the Apostle was the same life of Jesus Christ (Read Sacred Scriptures, 81).

From Father Tom: So the life of Paul was = to the life of Christ? We will avoid asking about the resemblance or lack of it between our life and Christ's (maybe the resemblance is closer than we think) and recall that the Master is living in each of us since Baptism working patiently in and through our defective human nature. God bless Him!

Those who familiarize themselves with our prayers and are faithful to them will, little by little, be enlightened, strengthened and guided in the spirituality of Saint Paul (SP 1952)

From Father Tom: Here is an interesting insight: we can share our prayers and devotional practices--in fact, we should. Our Prayer Book/Booklet is available for the asking and is an excellent way of introducing the Institute to potential vocations. The Prayer Booklet has some relevant observations about the value of prayer, and the INVITATION in the larger Prayer Book is a fine summary of how to live a full spiritual life.

Publications according to the Pauline spirit, as portrayed by Saint Paul. After stating the essential: "live in Christ," he adds, to the Philippians: "Finally, brethren, whatever is true, noble, just, pure, amiable, honored, if there is any virtue and it merits praise, think about these things? (AD 70).

From Father Tom: Significantly, though, this quote begins with a note on what sort of materials we should publish, it ends, as always, with an indication of the mentality that must always accompany our activity. At the risk of being monotonous, we have to say again: what the writer writes is of permanent value only if he lives what he recommends.

IS 49: 1-6
Ps 139
Acts 13: 22-26
Lk l: 57-66, 80

Sons and daughters of Saint Paul, receive with joy your inheritance from you Father Satin Paul: his wisdom, his counsels, his examples in every virtue, his spirit of piety, examples in every virtue, his spirit of piety, his zeal for all souls and for all peoples. Always bear in mind the various nations: there are no races, but only souls created for heaven and redeemed by the blood of Jesus (SP 1952)

From Father Tom: "Receive with joy your inheritance..." And we have received it. Now let's study it by reading the Letters and the Acts and assuming his viewpoint: "no races but only souls redeemed by the blood of Jesus." Query: how are your next-door neighbors? If they are different from your in every way... how do you relate to them?

"I am the light of the world", says Jesus, take from me and give to souls. The apostolate is doing what Saint Paul did (FSP 55, 125).

From Father Tom: The quote this time is perhaps slightly off-key--"the light of the world," "what St. Paul did." Neither are directly linked to the feast--rather the Gospel. From Father Tom: While we are not a prayer group, we are nevertheless people of prayer and have always to ask ourselves: what more would the Master ask us to do it He were to appear suddenly? From Father Tom: The reference here, of course, is to the print media but actually the point is contained in the first sentence which very much applies in every age. Isn't it hard to believe that we need piety? I tell you to reform and you reply, sincerely, "Yes, I will." And you mean it. But will you? From Father Tom: This quote really hits where it hurts. How many would claim to have "a big heart, a broad mind"? Broadness, perhaps, but not in the mind. Size, yes, but not in the heart. From Father Tom: Exactly. The Roman Christians St. Paul writes to were good people but not especially committed. WE ARE, and we must keep that thought constantly in the foreground of our minds. From Father Tom: Right on, dear Fr. Alberione! Is this not a constant temptation also in our own lives? Once Professed we toddle along, quietly pleased with our "progress" and not thinking even vaguely of some parish or other activity we might share in/ Once again let us get our ideas straight: WE ARE NOT A PRAYER GROUP but a group which constantly strives to do more in some sense. From Father Tom: We have here highlighted the two pillars of our Pauline Family: the Eucharist and the Gospel, especially the writings of St. Paul. It is regrettable that even good people who are quite familiar with the Evangelists tend to shy away from St. Paul and that gives you and me the opening for a valuable apostolate: read St. Paul ourselves (with a commentary) and encourage others to do the same. From Father Tom: Holy spirit, be our prompter--i.e., put the right words in our mouths. Speech is the area of our lives most difficult to control, and we all have to blush as we think of the foolish--not to say, sinful--things we said. St. James remarks that hte person who has learned to control his/her tongue is "perfect at every point."  As I frequently have said, our holy founder had made enviable progress on this point.

Saturday, June 7
EASTER WEEKDAY
FIRST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH--MARY, QUEEN OF APOSTLES
Acts 28: 16-20, 30-3
Ps 11
Jn 21: 20-25

It is necessary that we turn with more fervor to the queen of Apostles. She is our Mother, Teacher and Queen: from her we await the graces necessary for each one (RSP 17).

From Father Tom: The more we turn to the Queen of Apostles to ask for favors, the more we are in line not only with Bl. Alberione but with the whole Church. To convince ourselves of this we have only to run down the titles of her Litany. Just as the more we honor a painting, the more we honor the artist, so also the more we honor Mary, the more the Master is pleased.

ST. NORBERT, BISHOP
FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH--THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS
Acts 25: 13-21
Ps 103
Jn 21: 15-19

The letter of Saint Paul to the Romans is the first and principal sample of the apostolate of the editions, the model apostolate of the editions, the model upon which every Pauline edition must base itself (Spiritualita paolina, I, 88)

From Father Tom: So the Letter to the Romans is the model. Might it mean that in our writings we must not hesitate to point out the errors (of whatever kind, not necessarily sexual) politely, but firmly, and then go on to suggest a better way of living or thinking. Or perhaps--leaving sin aside for the  moment--we might highlight the special insights of Christianity on proper living, our relations with God, life in the Spirit...The choice is considerable.

ST. BONIFACE, BISHOP, MARTYR
FIRST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH--THE GUARDIAN ANGELS
Acts 22: 30; 23: 6-11
Ps 16
Jn 17: 20-26

The resolve of the Pauline family is to portray and live Saint Paul today. It does this by thinking, living out his zeal, praying and sanctifying itself, as Saint Paul would do, if he were alive today (SP 1954).

From Father Tom: "Portray and live (like) St. Paul..." That in fact has to be our first consideration. There is something dishonest if writers counsel others in proper living while they are much less scrupulous. St. Paul was transparently hotly right from his time as a student and then Rabbi. He reacted with righteous anger against the early against the early followers of Jesus and continued in this saintly mentality even when he had to change his theological viewpoint.

Wednesday, June 4
EASTER WEEKDAY
FIRST WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH--ST JOSEPH
Acts 20: 28-38
Ps 68: 29-36
Jn 17: 11-19

St. Paul: the saint of universality. Admiration and devotion for him began especially with the study and meditation of his Letter to the Romans. Form then on, Paul's personality, his holiness, his heart, his intimacy with Jesus, his contribution to dogmatic and moral teaching, the mark he left on church organization and his zeal for all peoples--became topics of meditation (AD 64).

From Father Tom: I often wonder if any of the promoters of same-sex marriage and other deviations from the straight-and-narrow, have taken time to read the first chapter of St. Paul's Letter to the Romans where the issue of homosexuality (you never hear that word nowadays) is highlighted in all its ugliness. And what about you and me? Are we not beginning to give ground, coughing discreetly to avoid a comment? What a distortion of values! Alberione had no idea things would come to this.

EASTER WEEKDAY
ST CHARLES LWANGA AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS
FIRST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH--THE SOULS IN PURGATORY
Acts 20: 17-27
Ps 68
Jn 17: 1-11

Before we placed the Institute under the protection of Saint Paul the Apostles, we have prayed much. We wanted a Saint who excelled in sanctity and at the same time was an example of apostolate. Saint Paul has combined in himself sanctity and apostolate )(Pensieri 55).

From Father Tom: An interesting insight here on the early days. Alberione received considerable Divine help but not when he himself had the awareness to make the decisions. Actually there were several models he might have followed--St. John Chrysostom, for example, was a famous preacher and there were others. But ptobably the outspoken love of Paul for Jesus was the deciding factor and doubtless especially his hymn to charity.

EASTER WEEKDAY
SS MARCELLINUS AND PETER, MARTYRS
FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH--ST PAUL
Acts 19: 1-8
Ps 68
Jn 16: 29-33

"HAVE A FEELING WITH SAINT PAUL FOR SOULS" --Saint Paul is the model Apostle. He blended the most disparate elements and made them his own at the service of an Idea, a Life, a Being. He was the unflagging Apostle who, "Omnia omnibus factus--made all things for all," was always everywhere, with everybody, with all means (AE 36).

From Father Tom: Probably most of us still have something to learn about St. Paul and the masterly way he tackled an extremely challenging task: not just preached an alternative to the God-given Mosaic Law, but proposed as the new hero humanly impossible and his last years were sad ones as most of the news about his efforts showed that the human results were mixed at best. Little did he realize that his Letters would be his real gift to the ages!
