FIRST WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH-
ST JOSEPH
BL JUNIPERO SERRA, PRIEST
ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Gn 21: 5-20
Ps 34: 7-13
Mt 8: 28-34

MONTHLY INTENTION
For the Church: The Church continues her pilgrimage in the midst of persecutions from the world and consolations from God, announcing the passion and death of the Lord until He comes. From the power of the risen Lord, she draws the strength to overcome afflictions and difficulties (Vat. II Lumen gentium--the Light of the Peoples).

From Father Tom: Mention of a Vatican II document reminds me that commentaries on the Vatican Council have been available on tape for quite some time and in written form somewhat more recently. Make sure you have them.

CHURCH
ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Gn 19: 15-29
Ps 26: 2-3, 9-10
Mt 8: 23-27

We prayed much before putting the Institute (= Pauline family) under the protection of St. Paul--he excelled in sanctity and at the same time is wonderful i nhis apostolate (FSP--Spiegazione delle Constitutzioni).

From Father Tom: "Wonderful in his apostolate." An important thought here is that at the end of his days St. Paul's apostolate was anything but "wonderful" --in fact, rather a failure. So--as always--we talk about what he TRIED, not his "success."

SAINTS PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES
Acts 12: 1-11
Ps 34: 2-9
2 Tm 4: 6-18
Mt 16: 13-19

Let us honor the holy apostles, let us be devoted to them and imitate them. Above all, let us correspond to Divine grace. May the Lord not pass by in vain! St. Paul says: "His grace was not useless for me" (1 Cor 15: 10 --BM p. 310)

From Father Tom: Very relevant thought. Do we ever examine ourselves on what we FAILED to do?? These are sins also and more likely than something we do deliberately wrong. Wake up, dear members! Reach out! You failed? Why worry? You TRIED!

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Wis 1: 13-24
Ps 30: 2-13
2 Cor 8: 7-15
Mk 5: 21-43

In our apostolic work we move with the times, so as to be relevant to the people we deal with. And this we will be if we remain faithful to Peter. In every age, the Pope is head of the people and pastors. To be always with him means to be always up to date (SP Mar 1950)

From Father Tom: We are talking, of course, about WHAT we communicate, not how we share it: the Vatican is a point of orthodox reference, not a source of modern communications.

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Gn 18: 1-15
(Ps)Lk 1: 46-55
Mt 8: 5-17

The name of St. Paul is always associated with that of St. Peter: two pillars of the Church: Peter, first in authority; Paul, first in work, and both working to build up the Church, both martyrs (BM 666)

From Father Tom: With which of these characteristics must we identify: Clearly with "working to build up the Church," e.g., the Institute. Take care that the Master doesn't have to ask you: when did you last reach out in some way to promote the Institute? You may not be as sinless as you think.

ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Gn 17: 1, 9-22
Ps 128: 1-5
Mt 8: 1-4

St. Paul practiced poverty totally. He belonged to a well-to-do family but earned his bread by working. And the obedience that first he gave to the law and the Jewish priests, he gave later to Peter and the Church (FSP 56, p. 276).

From Father Tom: Well? This particular quote is useful for its second sentence, but the first refers to a specific situation: the Jewish one. As for the second, I think we are probably on the right side of the law!

Believe in God, not ourselves. Too often we attribute to ourselves what we do, not to God and expect to be thanked personally. Thanks are due to God alone (RSP p. 46).

From Father Tom: That does not seem to require comment--just practice.

St Paul, at first a fierce persecutor, became an ardent apostle. His conversion was miraculous, useful for the Church and total: involving his mind, heart and life (BM 664/665).

From Father Tom: Have you had a conversion? I certainly had. Paul puts it perfectly in 1 Tim 1: 12-17. Read his required passage frequently and gratefully.

Ps 15: 2-5
Mt 7: 6, 12-14

Lack of meditation is the reason so many souls stray and have not the right spirit (FSP 31, pp 92-93).

From Father Tom: The reference here may not be merely that some of us do not take time to reflect on where we are going and how to get there, where we are going and how to get there, but also that our temperament is too lazy or fickle to bother about anything but immediate gratification. Time is passing and we need to get our situation right as soon as possible.

The spiritual master is to link charity with firmness and sincerity. Rather than allow himself to be led by the candidates' likes and dislikes, he is to guide them to high goals, decisively asking that they imitate St. Paul the Apostle (SP Jul-Aug 1953).

Our teacher is just one, Jesus Christ. It is not the world. Our Father, St. Paul, followed Him with constant and total dedication until death (SP Feb 1950).

From Father Tom: "The world"? The meaning here is mostly the danger of abandoning religious practices not so much of wild dissipation, but any relaxation can lead us astray, so we continue quietly and persistently on the well-worn path.

A soul filled with God, without being aware of it, invisibly and with equal certainty, attracts grace and does good (APD 1947, 278).

From Father Tom: And we can say the same--in the opposite sense--of a soul filled with Satan? Possibly not, because the grace of God pursues us everywhere, but the thought is rather scary.

In order to make progress, to fly on high, two wings are needed: humility and trust (FSP, p 36).

St. Paul is alien to narrow-mindless. The earth for him does not have importance; therefore, his prayer rises up, and has an effect in heaven, asking for holiness, the growth of the Gospel, knowledge and love of God (FSP 38, p. 633).

From Father Tom: What sort of prayer do I say...what sort of prayer do you say? First of all, it must rise from a serene heart and mind--no secondary aims or secret plans. Next, it must rise from a life striving to be better. Finally, it must be first the desires and will of God, not our desires and wills.

Vatican 2 was truly an ecumenical Council and indeed for the 2,500 Council Fathers it could have been called a Council of humanity due to the vision of the great problems it dealt with (SP Dec 1965).

From Father Tom: That was certainly the intent, but the unseen observer at every session was Satan. He made no speeches but he doubtless refined his tactics and the results are sadly visible.

Would that peace reign, that hunger be alleviated, that all social classes be enlightened and guided on the right way! The presence of Jesus Christ was felt in the Council, the voice of the Holy was heard. It could even be defined as the Council of Universal Love, or the Council of the Heart of Jesus Christ (SP Dec 1965).

From Father Tom: That was at the time. Since then the wild winds of change have undone much of the Council's wise decisions; the air is full of calls for new thinking and new thinking and new approaches; the media are running the world and the depths of St. Peter's are silent except for the tourists.

Make Me Rain

MAKE ME RAIN

I am only a spark; make me a fire,
I am only a string; make me a lyre.
I am only a drop; make me a fountain.
I am only an ant hill; make me a mountain.
I am only a feather; make me a wing.

Let us give the great treasures we have in our hearts: faith, hope the peace of God. For the world, the heart of St. Paul is again necessary (RdA, 130).

From Father Tom: Are we possessed of the heart of Paul-an incessant desire to promote the Institute--or are we waiting for "someone else" to take some step? Beware of turning the Institute into a Prayer Group but instead always have promotion pieces to be given to likely people--forget about the parish book rack.

After the Council the Fathers have felt themselves more united and strong, more persuaded that they are living, operative and responsible members, the horizon over all humanity has widened (SP Dec 1965).

From Father Tom: This comment seems to refer to the Bishops' feeling that they could direct events in their own Diocese without having to refer everything to Rome. In fact this feeling was only partly correct but under the current Pope, it is more likely to become a reality.

The real presence of Jesus in the tabernacle is the fruit of the Virgin Mary. To bring to the world this fruit of life, we must be very devoted to Mary and united to her (APD 1947, 231).

Like St. Paul, we too must apply the Gospel to our times and give it to today's world, employing the means that progress presents to us, means capable of transmitting the thought and the teaching of Jesus Christ (FSP 54-pp 224-225)..

From Father Tom: No problem at this level--at least we try to use modern media...but, backing up this use with prayer. Are we foolishly expecting the Sister Disciples to pray for our work--and finding in eternity that they have done the preaching, not us!

Thursday, June 4
FIRST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH-
GUARDIAN ANGELS
ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Tb 6: 10-11; 7: 1-17
Ps 128: 1-5
Mk 12: 28-34

St. Paul's great love for souls is expressed by the phrase "caritas Christi urget nos"--the love of Christ impels us. This love drives him to make himself all for all. He felt the needs of everybody, the joys of everybody and he shows it in his letters (RSP p. 274).

From Father Tom: The explanation? Very simple! Like all the Saints, from the moment he felt Christ's infinite love...he went overboard in his burning reaction to it. If only we could do this!

FIRST WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH-

COMPANIONS
Tb 2: 9-14
Ps 112: 1-9
Mk 12: 13-17

There were no condemnations in Vatican Council 2, no dogmatic definitions, no divisions or rancor--the Church showed herself a mother to whom her children are united, whose members are more nourished and more open is the way to salvation to those who have gone astray or are still enveloped by darkness (SP Dec 1965)

From Father Tom: In fact everything went beautifully..at the Council, in the vast spaces of St. Peter's... but Satan was at all the sessions and no sooner had the closure come in December '65, than he began to stir up doubts or, perhaps more often, hasty and unwarranted changes in the liturgy

MONTHLY INTENTION

Suffer with those who suffer, be joyful with those who are joyful. Suffer, especially when the Church suffers, be joyful when she is joyful. To live in a union of mind, will and heart, with the Pope means to take part in the universality of his concerns (SP Nov 1953).

From Father Tom: Fr. Alberione was always scrupulously faithful to the Holy Father in all the steps he took--and so we are not surprised at his success.
