MONTHLY INTENTIONS For the souls departed.

"In the earthly liturgy we share by anticipation the heavenly liturgy which is celebrated in the holy city of Jerusalem, toward which we tend as pilgrims, where Christ sits at the right hand of God."  (Sacrasanctum Concilium 8)

From Father Tom: "Sacrasanctum Conciliumn" was a "Constitution" or Statement on the Liturgy, e.g. not just Church ceremonies but also a reminder of how their celebration on earth is paralleled by the reality in eternity. The Holy Souls (not the "poor": souls; they are saved, we are not) are an important part of Church prayer, though the real poor are the unfortunates dying unprepared and rushed in Hell.

Life is a journey. One arrives more or less at the final airport or station without warning and there he hears the final sentence on the manner he did his journey. This determinations (SP Jun 1949).

From Father Tom: Indeed it should, but very often it doesn't. "Die? That's the last thing you should worry about..." It's a joke, but one in very bad taste. Never fail to live and to promote our "Save the Dying" Association. So many die suddenly and all consideration is given to their name and fame...none to the state of their souls.

The Saints are wonders of the Holly Spirit, people in whom He lived in an abundant manner (FSP 32, p 313).

From Father Tom: How do we know? Because they did remarkable things? No. Because they were remarkable people of virtue, "living Saints", as the saying goes.

Thoughts on Suffering

" 969 Those who pray and suffer, leaving action for others, will not shine here on earth; but what a radiant crown they will wear in the kingdom of life! Blessed be the 'apostolate of suffering'!"

Spreading books and periodicals is not effective if it does not lead to confession and communion. The point of arrival here is union with Jesus. Always aim at this end (Pensieri, p. 160).

From Father Tom: My thought exactly! Are we skipping morning Mass and the Visit during the day? Unfortunately, yes. Meanwhile, concern is directed at our lack of material progress. That has many explanations. Failure to live our religious commitment has only one.

St Paul is the one who points out the Divine Master. He took the Gospel, deeply meditated on it and then adapted and applied it to the world, to the needs of his time and of the various nations (FSP 54, 224).

From Father Tom: "He took the good news," e.g. his special revelations from the Lord, meditated on them for three years in the desert and then applied them to the limited world in which he worked. The thought is sound but the word "Gospel" is misleading if we think of the four Gospels.

Our devotion to Jesus, our Divine Master, will be prepared and perfected by devotion to Mary, our teacher (UPS IV 234).

From Father Tom: All of us need a mother--even when we are big boys and girls. She was always there for us, listened to our good and bad news, dried our tears and --frequently--greeted her first grandchild with tears of joy. Let us turn often to Mary and see if she's not the best of mothers.

We shall become expert masters of souls, if previously we have become humble and diligent disciples of Christ (UPS III 125).

From Father Tom: There was a time when this could be clearly said of priests and Religious who were what they were supposed to be and were dealing with "disciples" who believed in certain principles even if they didn't practice them. But...in today's world and today's Church...?

Holy priests remain strong in difficulties because they know they have been called by God. They spread the word of God with great consistency. They lead and direct their people, insisting on the right thing whether circumstances are suitable or unsuitable (SM 184).

From Father Tom: How hard it is in our day for priests to live up to this standard! The laity is everywhere substituting for them..so many of their colleagues have left or would do well to leave...the recent history of the priesthood has not been a happy one...and they are for the most part overworked and underestimated (and under appreciated--my note).  God help all of us!

We are citizens of Christ's kingdom, the Church, no matter the nation we live in. We always belong to her, for the Church is universal (SP Nov 1953).

From Father Tom: Universal, yes, but always affected and sometimes destroyed by its members. What is the Church like in today's United States? Confused in its members and challenged in its teaching. Not the Church we knew in our youth nor-as things seem now--not the one we will leave to our children (if we have any).

The Maestro, Timothy Giaccardo, was my close collaborator, he taught various school subjects, spoke by example to all the aspirants, was spiritual director of many, collaborated in formation of the Constitutions and the approval of the ecclesiastical authorities (UPS III 1953).

From Father Tom: Well, yes, but as we had to note already, the two Saints remained still very human especially in the beginning when things were not clear. Such is human existence: we rub against others like stones in a stream and as the water (in our case, the grace of God) flows over us, we lose our rough edges.

The Our Father is a most convenient prayer for the apostolate soul. It is the most missionary of prayers (RdA 124).

From Father Tom: "Missionary?" Now what might that mean? For me it means the prayer which really "goes out" in all circumstances to all peoples and covering all their needs. Truly, a prayer the Lord himself taught us!

You do not have just one more small devotion, but Jesus, Master, no text-book, but the Holy Gospel, no food but the Eucharist, and no mother and model but Mary (FSP 56, p. 271).

From Father Tom: And we can say, we do not have a “small” or limited apostolate either, but the most relevant one in our time or in any future time. The problem is to live up those ideals.

“Jesus Master, Way, Truth and Life” is a program of life for Paulines and involves doing everything through Christ, with Christ and within Christ…it is a complete program for spiritual people and for those who are called to a higher spiritual life (Sermons on the Divine Master, p. 89).

From Father Tom: Or even for us who perhaps are not called to higher realms of spirituality. The Lord did not come only to help those who can establish a special relationship with, but to help everyone and especially sinners. The Pharisees though they knew it all but received a short and sharp course in real spirituality.

From Father Tom: The founder saw these Sisters as working in parishes doing all those tasks which the pastor cannot for lack of time. The increasing presence of laity in parishes, following Vatican 2, led them into other fields such as education.

FIRST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH—
THE SOULS IN PURGATORY
ST BRUNO, PRIEST AND
BL. MARIE-ROSE DUROCHER, VIRGIN
ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Jon 1:1-10(PS) Jon 2
Ps 130: 1-8
Lk 10: 38-42

No one becomes a Pauline so as to serve in a particular nation--including his or her own--but rather to serve wherever he or she is sent for the purpose of God's glory and the good of souls (SP Nov 1953).

From Father Tom: And of course, we mustn't refuse to go to this or that destination--such a refusal puts us in a false situation outside God's will and, therefore, cutting ourselves off from His blessings.

FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH—
ST PAUL THE APOSTLE
ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Jon 1:1-2:1-2, 11
(PS) Jon 2
L 10: 25-37

The Ecumenical Council, Vatican 2, has above all a pastoral purpose, that is, helping souls to reach salvation; the Good Shepherd, Who teaches, guides and sanctifies (Alle Suore di Gesu, Buon Pastore)

From Father Tom: This, of course, is the purpose behind all any of us does. It is easy to get bogged down in a personal prayer and sanctification, but if there is no reaching out to bring our message to new people, we have missed the meaning of our membership.

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Gn 2: 18-24
{s 128": 1-6
Heb 2: 9-11
Mk 10" 2-16

The Church offers salvation to all, as we see from the mandate: Go and preach to all nations the Gospel, guide both individuals and society in the right way, communicate the life of grace through baptism (SP Dec 1965).

From Father Tom: Ah...Baptism...we receive it without knowing (for the most part) and--to be honest--we frequently live as if we had never been baptized, e.g., received into our life the Lord of Life.  Then in the Institute we have a second Baptism...how's it going?

Ps 69: 33-37
Lk 10: 17-24

Devotion to the Rosary is a devotion that is easy, efficacious and adapted to all times, places and persons. Each mystery proposes for us a teaching to extract, a virtue to practice, a grace to ask for (RSP p. 61).

From Father Tom: True. But do you have any problem in concentrating on what we are supposed to be meditating on?

The angels collect our prayers in their hands and present them to the Lord together with their Adoration, their thanksgiving and their ineffable supplications (RSP p. 48).

From Father Tom: Not the most profound thing the Founder every wrote...as the years pass it becomes more difficult to find new material.
