FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH--
ST PAUL
ST ALPHONSUS LIGUORI, BISHOP,
DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Jer 28: 1-17
Ps 119: 29, 43, 79-80, 95
Mt 14: 13-21

MONTHLY INTENTION: So that everywhere there may be formed a family, religious and social environment suitable for the development of vocations and of correspondence to them (LdP, p. 44).

From Father Tom: This has to begin with you and me. There is no use longing for a better environment if we are not living our Pauline vocation to the maximum. That's OUR contribution--and not just complaining, but acting.

Ps 90: 3-6, 12-14, 17

A man of willpower is one who can command himself, who can guide himself with firm decision along the path he undertakes, dominating all the abilities of his body for the attainment of his goal (BM p. 1060).

From Father Tom: It strikes me as I write, that the Founder might have given a self-description in these few words: incessantly calm and controlled, always reflective and always moving decisively onwards.  I speak for myself when I say that I have a long way to go before reaching this state.

ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Jer 18: 1-6
Ps 146: 1-6
Mt 13: 47-53

When God finds a soul humble and docile to His will like Mary most holy, He makes use of that soul to accomplish His plans of love and wisdom. But the soul has to be docile, like the brush in the hands of the painter, or like a rag in the hands of a housewife (UPS I, 486).

From Father Tom: This example probably applies more to the life in a convent or a monastery than it does to everyday life: the former situation does not necessarily involve loss in doing somewhat blindly what we are told to do. However, in secular life we have to be more defensive and especially where others are involved.

From Father Tom: Seems a very much accessible goal--until you try putting it into action.

Always pressing on, always progressing, always preparing for that heavenly life that awaits us! Let this be our holy torment. We aspire higher, we strain forward more as we make use of new means to save others (SP Apr 1949).

From Father Tom: And as we do this, we are automatically offering the maximum assistance to those in difficulty. So the struggle is there, but is lightened by the thought that "someone out there needs me."

Mt 20: 20-28

Let us remain in the Light--Jesus Christ. In turn, let us mirror and shine this light we have received on others. All our apostolate is a preaching of the word of God.

From Father Tom: The Founder often speaks of light and of himself as a half-blind person stumbling along through life. HALF--blind, perhaps, but with extra ordinary vision in the other eye!

Every time we can ignite the light for souls. Is it or perhaps our duty to do it? And if men run toward the precipice because they are in darkness, are we not bound to light up this darkness (FSP 41, p. 217)

From Father Tom: This "lighting" begins with prayer for the person or problem. This is indispensable and indeed without it we cannot hope to solve spiritual problems. Then we need reflection. And, finally, we need spirit-filled action.

Make Christian the thoughts of men, their hearts, their lives, everywhere. Prepare the terrain so that it becomes good and excellent; then sow with full hands; the seed is the word of God; and keep watch so that the enemy does not sow weeds during the night (SB Mar 1950).

From Father Tom: These are certainly wonderful goals but they were difficult to accomplish in 1950, not to talk of 2016. And yet...to abandon all effort is not worthy of a Pauline. Let's do what we CAN...leave the results to God.

From Father Tom: One interesting way of being devoted to Mary is to recite her Angelus three times daily: 6 a.m., 12 noon and 6 p.m.  Try to make it a generous threefold offering.

From Father Tom: "Apostolate" for us is mostly our family or work life--none of which seems to be oriented toward helping or enlightening anyone. So.. how do we solve the problem?  By recollection (What amd I doing? Why am I doing it? How am I doing it?)

Novena for Peace

Novena for Peace!

In response to the violence in the United States in the past week, the Knights of Columbus are inviting everyone to join in praying a Novena for Peace from July 14-22, using the Peace Prayer of Saint Francis. Let us pray the novena, and invite others to join us!
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Against every new crisis experienced by the Church, Mary counters with her defense, showing herself, especially as a Teacher of truth and Mother of faith (SP Nov-Dec 1959).

From Father Tom: This is not always evident--we see the damage and the external efforts to prevent it. However if we admit that Mary is the unseen cause of all our piety, than her role is undeniable. Hos 14: 2-10
Ps 51: 3-9
Mt 10: 15-23

An obstacle to simplicity is envy, which is greatly dangerous. Another impediment is pride (FSP 41).

From Father Tom: Envy...the first sin which ruined the first Divine plan. Or so most people might think. However, others point out that if there had been no Fall, we would never have known that God loves us enough to die for us.

The Lord grants material(s) graces only when He sees that they can contribute to the good of our souls (RSP, p 279).

From Father Tom: And also when we are ready to receive them, i.e., the Lord sees that this is the time. We must work and pray...and try to be better.

The Lord has wanted to give us this grace of a House (Ariccia) dedicated only to Spiritual Exercises. Let us correspond to this grace by practicing silence, uniting ourselves to Jesus and with an ever more generous will to make progress (APD 1959, 82).

From Father Tom: We were very blessed to have the Holy Father select this House for the annual Vatican Retreat--the Founder must be looking on with joy and satisfaction.

ORDINARY WEEKDAY
Hos 8: 4-7, 11-13
Ps 115: 3-10
Mt 9: 32-38

When we believe that we can accomplish everything with our strength, God humiliates us by  making us see our nothingness (Alla sorgente, p. 17)

From Father Tom: Or, perhaps more frequently by making others see our nothingness.  When we have to go public with our idiocy, it really hurts.

May this country and each of you be renewed in gratitude for the many blessings and freedoms that you enjoy. And may you defend these rights, especially your religious freedom, for it has been given to you by God himself. May he bless you all.

ST PAUL
ORDINARY WEEKDAY
INDEPENDENCE DAY (USA)
Hos 2: 16-22
Ps 115: 3-10
Mt 9: 18-26

Blessed are the peaceful! It is not true that they are sacrificed persons. In fact they have an aura of esteem and trust and enjoy interior peace.  The peace they lavish outside is first experienced by them interiorly (BM, p. 90).

From Father Tom: However, we must distinguish between peace and false peace. Do wrong enough times and you eventually come to terms with it, live in peace with it...a false peace unfortunately.

THE DIVINE MASTER, WAY,

TRUTH AND LIFE
Is 66: 10-14

Ps 66: 1-7
Gal 6: 14-18
Lk 10: 1-9

Eucharist and Bible form the Catholic Press apostolate. Let these two realities be always inseparable and united in your hearts (FSP, p. 137)

From Father Tom: Which seems to mean that all our apostolate should in some way involve the Eucharist--and first of all by venerating It--and the Bible by reading it and expressing its ideas in what we say or publish.

FIRST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH –
MARY QUEEN OF APOSTLES
BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Am 9:11-15
Ps 85:9-14
Mt 9:14-17

Be wise, banish illusions, take the way Jesus Christ taught us: “Behold your Mother” (Maria Regina degli Apostoli, 250).

Which perhaps means especially that we should cultivate her guidance by prayer and prayer for light: What can I do to promote the Church and its influence? What can you do? In my case and yours the answer is obvious – though challenging: Promote the growth of our Institute.

MONTHLY INTENTION

That in each of us a deep vocational awareness may be formed: all Catholics, using all means, for all vocations and apostolates (LdP, p. 44).

FROM FATHER TOM: Assuredly, but the accomplishment of this admirable goal comes up against obstacles that did not exist in the Founder’s time: the problems of the priesthood and the family, the attitudes of Catholics in general, the harm caused by the media. We just have to pray more and plan better.

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR DECEASED: Servo di Dio mons. Francesco Fasola IJP(1988) - Sr. M. Luigina Della Penna PD (1998) - Fr. Alessio Barbero SSP (2006) - Fr.
