FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH--ST PAUL THE APOSTLE
ADVENT WEEKDAY
Is 2: 1-5
Ps 72
Mt 8: 5-11

INTENTION OF THE MONTH:  "Flying over Palestine, let us thank the Divine Master and the Blessed Virgin who have sanctified it" (SP May 1949)--During this month let us pray for our brothers and sisters of the Pauline Family in Uganda, Uruguay, Vatican, Venezuela, Zambia.

From Father Tom:  This is one of the reflections of the Founder which he used to share with the members on his return from a round-the-world trip. Other time he spoke of India, South America, etc, commenting on the need for Christianity to become more widespread in every nation.

Please Pray for Our Deceased: Sr. Christine Rimmele FSP (1991)--Sr. M. Raffaella Bernardin FSP (1992)--Fr. Emilio Mammana SSP (1996)--Fr. Ivo Marchi IJP (2001)--Ray Hopponen (no year)

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Is 63: 16-19, 64: 2-7
Ps 80: 2-3, 15-19
1 Cor 1: 3-9
Mk 13: 33-37

May this time of Advent serve us especially to ask the Lord for the repetition of the coming, that is of the Incarnation of the Son of God in the present world, which mostly still ignores or refuses to recognize the Savior (RSP p. 304).

From Father Tom:  Advent? Where has 2014 gone...? It has gone into eternity taking with it our good deeds, prayers and dedication...or we have simply gone through day after day piling up responsibility. The choice is ours and the result is forever.

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
Rv 22: 1-7
Ps 95: 1-7
Lk 21: 34-36

The Sanctuary of the Queen of Apostles must be the center of prayer for all vocations: center of the bearers of Christ like the Virgin going after the annunciation to the house of Zechariah, like the Twelve transformed into Apostles (SP May 1949).

From Father Tom:  I had the privilege of being present in 1954 at the dedication of our majestic Basilica. A Bishop was present from the Vatican to do the actual dedication; but the Founder was obviously the center of attention: the Basilica was clearly the fruit of super-heroic faith, taking into account the conditions of the nation at the time.

Love the Church and follow her, and pray for her. Let us recite well the Pact or Secret of Success, we who are called to work with the Church and for the Church (RSP p. 284).

From Father Tom:  A reference to an important document-very easy to understand but not so easy to put into practice. It calls for absolute dedication to piety and apostolate, and absolute observance of the vows we have made. This requires plenty of goodwill and a regular reading of our Statue.

Everything has been carried out with the light, guidance and approval of the Church and, more precisely, of the "Pastor of the Church who guides us."  Here is the master way: in Christ and in the Church. Always as you have been born and live today (SP JUL 1957).

From Father Tom:  A further quote from the above mentioned document in which he re-emphasizes the basic points: his fidelity to the Church and to the Divine Master. Our role is first of all to understand what our special devotion is and then to live it as best we can.

I am sure that all the direction given is substantially in conformity with God and the Church. Of infinite value as life and devotion is Jesus Christ, Divine Master, Way, Truth and Life who can illumine all religious perfection and apostolate (AD 351-352).

From Father Tom:  It is said that a man's last words tell everything about his life. Actually, this quote is not from his death-bed, but from a document we can call his last Will and Testament in which he sums up various aspects of his life and work. He emphasizes his fidelity to the Church and the value of the special devotion he was inspired to leave to the ages.

The mission of Saint Paul in the Church is wonderful. How much do we owe him for the organization of the Churches, for those examples of virtue and piety that he has left for all Christianity, for those letters that merit for him a lasting remembrance (RSP p. 271).

From Father Tom:  Now here's what you might call a relevant quote from teh Founder! Unfortunately it lacks a reference to St. Paul's suffering for the churches, suffering to convince the pagans of the new way of thinking, suffering when his work is being undone by Jews who see him as a traitor to Judaism, suffering as some of his converts fall away...what a man, what  a great Saint!

Sing about beautiful things, full of meaning and devotion, so that you do beautiful services, and you do not come out with strange praises. The Pauline Family must also be a teacher in :"piety" (RSP p. 57).

From Father Tom:  What are "strange praises"? I think a better translation would be "strange hymns." I guess the Founder is referring to the sort of Church music that marked the period after Vatican Council II. However, there were also some beautiful new numbers and we sing these beautiful new numbers and we sing these without any danger of feeling "strange."

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE
Ez 34: 11-17
Ps 23: 1-6
1 Cor 15: 20-28
Mt 25: 31-46

The Church's liturgy is a symbol, a foretaste and a means for the ineffable liturgy that takes place in paradise. Those who love beautiful celebrations, sacred chant and ceremonies, who penetrate the spirit of the sacred liturgy have with themselves a sign of participating one day in the eternal liturgy of heaven (SP Dec 1952, II).

From Father Tom:  We agree. But talking about the Institute, it is easy to love the music and atmosphere but...the liturgy needs people and to find people is anything but singing hymns and playing the organ. First we must find singers and organists...and are we doing something practical to find them.

Penetrated by the truths of Christianity, the soul feels fired by zeal to make them known, to extend the kingdom of Christ and to lead souls to heaven. The new desires, thoughts and concerns of that soul: the thoughts and desires of apostles and apostolate (FSP 47, p. 498).

From Father Tom:  What are our "desires, thoughts and concerns" for the Institute? Am I just going from day to dreamy day saying my prayers...and making a prayer group of what should be a dynamic activity? If you are, then you haven't read Article 36...and it's time you did! THE PRESENTATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
Rv 10: 8-11
Ps : 119: 14, 24, 72-103
Lk 19: 45-48

Mary had a heart similar to that of Jesus in sharing His desires; she made all of them her own. It is necessary that you include the desires of the Pope, of the bishops, of the priests, of the ministers of God, of the missionaries, of all the souls that give themselves to the apostolate Especially in prayer, during the Eucharistic visit, feel the I thirst of Jesus and the sighs of the Church (SPD 1947, 90).

From Father Tom:  Very nice quote and certainly agree 100%. But then comes another thought: how can I feel with the Church during the Visit? I would like to but...I have a splitting headache. Well, I think you know the answer: the headache can can, and should be, offered for the needs of the Church, leaving the Master to decide to which need it is to be applied. Mary, too, had difficult moments but she faced up to them heroically.

Only in Christ and in the Church are to be found the Way, Truth and Life for the individual person and for society; for time and for eternity (SP Mar 1950).

From Father Tom:  We might stop a moment to reflect that when we talk freely of "Way, Truth and Life," this is not just one more Church devotion, of which there are many, but a new devotion introduced to the Church by our Founder! We are unique in being mandated to preach through the media (others use media as part of their mission) and in seeing what we do in this three-fold light. Ps : 150: 1-6
Lk 19: 11-28

The Church crosses the stormy sea of this world agitated by continuous tempests. We must recognize that only the power of her divine Founder prevents that she goes underwater, in spite of her weakness. Jesus Christ seems to be sleeping, but He is always vigilant (BM 558-559).

From Father Tom:  Another thought on the same lines (could the compiler of these quotes not have found a new line of thought?) Perhaps he could but perhaps also--in our confused and sometimes heathen world--certain points cannot be often made. And our experiences of our own weakness tell us the same thing.

ST. ROSE PHILIPPINE DUCHESNE, VIRGIN
Rv 3: 1-6, 14-22
Ps : 15: 2-5
Lk 19: 1-10

Not all the members of the church are truly saints. They belong materially to the body of the Church but do not belong to her soul. And they do not receive from the Church that nourishment that she bestows on her faithful children (RSP p. 283).

From Father Tom:  Perhaps fearful that he had made fidelity to the Church sound too easy, the Founder now states the obvious: the continued fidelity of the Church is not in-built but depends on Jesus the Savior. And we can state an obvious truth: if we persevere in our vocation and hopefully become more than average Paulines, that too is the work of the Divine Master.

Let us admire the great kingdom of the Church; let us put in our soul the divine wheat of the Gospel, reading it and listening to it with devotion (BM p. 563).

From Father Tom:  Another warm tribute by the Founder to the Church he loved and served. And it is a Church dominated by the writings and the personality of St. Paul. No wonder we should be faithful to the Pope,to the memory and works of St. Paul. Hopefully, our current series on the great Saint's life and letter will inspire all of us to a deeper commitment.

Mt 25: 14-30:

The powers of hell will never knock down the Church. Twenty centuries of history are a confirmation of the Divine promise. In order to prevail, faith should fail also the Catholic hierarchy with the primacy of Peter, or the union of the sound part of the Christian people with the Pope, things that cannot happen (BM p. 679)

From Father Tom:  The Church is not a human institution, but a divine foundation; and for this reason, unsinkable as a whole even if parts of it will always be in need of repair and correction--this is the human element.

Lk 18: 1-8

With the Church the way is sure, the light is full, grace is abundant. One who has the Church as his Mother has Mary for advocate and God as hi Father (BM p. 252).

From Father Tom:  Another thought on the same lines but here the Founder introduces Mary whom we might perhaps not normally associate with the question of handing on correct Church doctrine. A useful thought, however, is that she is called among other titles, Seat of Wisdom, and that her last recorded words in the Gospel are: "Do whatever he tells you." (John 2: 5)

No ingeniousness or school or book can be a secure guide like the Church; she is Jesus Christ Who lives across the centuries (BM p. 200).

From Father Tom:  Clearly the founder saw the confusion that followed the Council and foresaw that it would get even worse, so he never tired of repeating that our "Secret of Success" is to learn the Church's viewpoint on debatable matters and to accept it in faith. That is what he did.

And this the Pauline Family must accomplish through those means that Providence wants, that the Church has assigned to us, that are the most abundant with fruits not only among those who are not yet of the fold of Christ (SP Jun 1955).

From Father Tom:  Here the Founder is again underlining the nature of our work in the Church--with some form of media--and how we do it: with TRUTH--the authentic Church teaching, LIFE-interesting and relevant aspects of the truth and WAY--in the best binding and covers (books), in the best paper and printing (magazines), etc.

The Church is not old, she is always young and those who live as children of God and of the Church must always renew themselves. The method Way, Truth and Life in the apostolate is growing and progressing (FSP 50, p. 162).

From Father Tom:  The Church, remarks the Founder, is not old. True, the years have passed for it as for everything else but what remains is the ever-new, ever-relevant teaching on faith and morals. And Fr. Alberione remarks that "the Way, Truth and Life" method is progressing, e.g., we present in our apostolate not just knowledge but truthful knowledge founded on a great Life-Jesus Master.

From Father Tom:  Here we have the Founder offering a thought much like the commentary on Nov. 10: pray for souls in every nation and for other Paulines working with them and for them. But do even more: read Catholic periodicals and especially the official Vatican newspaper--Osservatore Romano: a constant corrective to the views expressed in many secular papers.

Be universal, remain well with the principles with which you have been born: born of the Host with a spirit that is universal and at the same time Roman, Catholic, intact (FSP 50, pp 169-170).

From Father Tom:  From the beginning, Fr. Alberione had what we might call grandiose ideas, not certainly of is own glory but of the need for the Pauline Family to grasp that it is born to bring Church teaching to the whole world-just as our Patron, St. Paul, dreamed of doing. If we cannot personally do this, we can always pray for the efforts of our brothers and sisters in other lands.

In the world in general, an abyss between reason and faith has been dug up, between Christian doctrine and civil culture. And yet divine science is the most worthy of man, the indispensable science, the greatest wealth (RdA 273).

From Father Tom:  If this statement was true fifty years ago, how much more true it is today! and yet, as the Founder remarks, there is no need to contrast the sacred and the profane. Properly understood and lived the teaching of hte Church benefits all human existence and not simply the "spiritual" aspect.

In the Pauline Family we venerate among the Doctors of the Church, especially: Saint Thomas Aquinas for philosophy, Sanit Augustine for theology, Saint John of the Cross for mysticism, Saint Gregory the Great for pastoral, Saint Alphonsus De Liguori for morals, and Saint Francis de Sales for ascetics (SP Mar 1955)

From Father Tom:  What sort of commentary do we need here? Possibly a repetition of the point made elsewhere: Fr. Alberione from the beginning allowed himself to be guided by the authentic teaching of the Church represented by this list of great minds and intellects at the service of truth.

First Thursday of the Month--The Guardian Angels
Phil 3: 3-8
Ps 105: 2-7
Lk 15: 1-10

If one has his heart full, his mind convinced and in his soul there is great love for the doctrine of the Church, he feels the need to communicate it. It is a life that communicates itself to a life (FSP 51, p. 224).

From Father Tom:  Once again we have no date but how true the statement is! And how much more relevant now than it was then. Do we have to be on our guard? Absolutely! All around us people are misbehaving and the media are incessantly telling us that it's NOT misbehavior but that we are not moving with the times. And who wants to feel old and out-of-touch?

OF THE DAY

Phil 2: 12-18
Ps 27: 1-14
Lk 14: 25-33

The apostolate of the editions requires of one who exercises it, that setting aside his private sentiments, he always incline(s) his mind, will and heart to think, operate adn feel adn therefore write in accord with the Church (AE 35).

From Father Tom:  Here is the same thought as yesterday's but expressed more calmly. We can sense the anxiety of the Founder who may have had special Divine inspirations about the future side by side with his remarkable original inspirations which led to the foundation of our Pauline Family.

Let us stick to the Gospel. Let us not look for new theories on the pretext of modernity (RSP p. 58).

From Father Tom:  A pretty blunt statement but a very important one! There is no date, but presumably we are talking about the wild '60's especially after Vatican Council II when practically any opinion about any aspect of the Church was more likely to get a hearing (or a reading) than the orthodox teaching

"FEEL WITH THE CHURCH"--Let us feel ourselves as members living and operating in the mystical body of the Church, which Jesus Christ won with His blood (SP Apr 1949).

From Father Tom:  The Founder, from the beginning, was very sensitive about doing the will of God as represented by the Holy Father. He consulted scrupulously with his Bishop and later with the Vatican before taking new steps and he added to the Profession formula then a special vow of fidelity to the Pope (included in our formula also).

Charity towards the deceased draws the mercy of God and the remissions of our debts with Him (SP Oct 1961).

From Father Tom:  Charity toward the deceased--what can be more important than to pray and make sacrifices fort the Holy Souls...except perhaps to pray and make sacrifices to the huge number dying without preparation. The thought is the same as yesterday--repetition, but for a very good reason indeed.

Please Pray for Our Deceased: Fr. Di Giovannantonio SSP (1985)--Sr. Lorenzina Franco SGBP (1995)--Mr. Brem--Corinne Smith--Mike (no years given).
