I intend to belong to this admirable Pauline Family--as a servant, now and in heaven, where I will look after those who use the latest means of good, in holiness, in Christ, and in the Church (AD 101).

From Father Tom: Not a bad program for you and me either!  We don't lose our identity when we die, rather it becomes reinforced as our power to help the Family on earth grows stronger.

1 Jn 2: 3-11
Lk 2: 22-35

There were many who offered themselves in self-sacrifice for the fruitful outcome of the work.  The Lord accepted the offering of some of these...

From Father Tom: Without actually offering our lives-which is what those early cooperators did-we, who are more than cooperators, can think ahead and ask the Master to bless us more abundantly in the future than has been His will up to this.

There were many who offered themselves in self-sacrifice for the fruitful outcome of the Institute.  The Lord accepted the offering of some of these.

From Father Tom: If we live the Institute life to the full: observing both the spiritual and the material aspects, it is already a life of sacrifice with great profit for each of us.

ST JOHN THE APOSTLE, EVANGELIST
1 Jn 1: 1-4
Jn 20: 1, 2-8

Often there was no choice except a period of serene and calm maturing.  The Lord would dispose a brief period of illness for him (AD 31-32).

From Father Tom: This thought could be useful should the Lord "dispose a brief period of illness" (or maybe not so brief) for you or me.  we can always ask ourselves: what is this illness telling me?  Too much activity and not enough prayer?  Too much trust in ourselves?  A needed space to ask ourselves if your lifestyle is what it should be.

ST STEPHEN, THE FIRST MARTYR
Acts 6: 8-60
Mt 10: 17-22

Man has so many imperfections, defects, errors, insufficiencies and doubts... we have to put everything into the hands of Divine Mercy and let ourselves be guided (AD 31-32).

From Father Tom:  Putting things into the hands of Divine Mercy does not mean sitting with our own hands folded, waiting for God to solve our problems.  He has so much else to do... let's solve them ourselves!

Personal note: With the help of His grace, of course.

THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD
>>> Readings according to the Mass times

The manger is the first pulpit of the Divine Master.  In silence He teaches us humility, poverty and patience (BM 535-536).

From Father Tom: Silence.  Our noisy age doesn't know what the word means and doesn't want to.  Every few seconds must be filled with sound in case people might just begin to think or, still more unlikely, repent for a life, "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing".

Please Pray for Out Deceased:  Sr. Carla M. Vovio FSP (1970)-- Bro Elia Orsini SSP (1981)-- Sr. Angela De Robertis FSP (1989)-- Mario Zanini, Gabrielite (1990)-- Fr. Lucas Caravina SSP (1998)-- Fr. Vito Raimondo IJP (1999)-- Fr. Augustine Ampattukuzhy SSP (2005)

ADVENT WEEKDAY
2 Sam 7: 1-16
Lk 1: 67-69

Sometimes Divine Providence acts so naturally as to make it hard to see which is grace and which is nature (AD 31-32).

From Father Tom: But there IS a Providence even if difficult to see it or believe in it.  God loves us always with a love as great as Himself--that's all He can do. In times of trial we have to fall back on this basic thought.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Mi 5: 1-4
Heb. 10-: 5-10
Lk 1: 39-45

The Son of God became human to offer Himself as a victim of peace and love (BM 290).

From Father Tom:  But also to enable us to become united with God in time and in eternity.  At Baptism not only does the Son enter our lives but so also do the Father and the Spirit!  We are already Part of the Holy Trinity if we don not cast God out by serious sin!

ADVENT WEEKDAY
1 Sam 1: 24-28
Lk 1: 46-55

His prayer lasted four hours after the Mass (AD 17-19).

From Father Tom: And his subsequent hours of prayer were even longer.  And he said that leaving prayer aside to do more work is a ruinous expedient. Strong words. We can't pray all the time, but let's pray some of the time!

Sg 2: 8-14
Lk 1: 39-45

He felt a profound obligation to prepare to do something for the lord, and for his contemporaries in the new century (AD 17-19).

From Father Tom: This is the Founder talking about what he experienced during his 4-hour Adoration. And what about us--Adoration or not?  We have made an official Church commitment and every day we must feel an equally-profound obligation to carry out every aspect of it.

Lk. 1: 26-38

A particular light came from the Host, a greater understanding of Jesus' invitation:  "Come to me, all of you..."  (AD, 17/19).

From Father Tom: The Founder, of course, had exceptional experiences corresponding to his mission, but each of us has a mission and in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament we, too, will receive the light the Lord has destined for us--if not then, later.

ADVENT WEEKDAY
Jdgs 13: 2-7, 24-25
Lk 1: 5-25

Our life began in Jesus Christ, and like Jesus Christ, in the crib.  "Glory to God on high and peace on earth to men of goodwill." (UPS 1/374).

From Father Tom:  "Glory to God..." to God...That's not always our principal motivation, maybe it never is. But if we act for any other reason we just waste time. The frequent repetition of the Morning Office, or stopping when we remember it to turn to the Lord, will make a real difference when we appear before Him.

Please Pray for Our Deceased: Sr. Giacinta Gopmes FSP (1966)-- Fr. Carmine Salerni SSP (1981)-- Sr. Giuseppina Albesiano FSP (1983)-- Fr. Girolamo Casolari SSP (1990)--Fr. Pascual Leviste SSP (2000)-- Sr. M. Antonietta Mineo PD (2003).

ADVENT WEEKDAY
Jer  23: 5-8
Mt 1: 18-24

Before God and man I feel the gravity of the mission entrusted to me by the Lord (UPS 1/374).

From Father Tom: The founder could say this and mean it, in view of his special vocation. But all of us have a mission which no one else has or ever will have.  To fail is just as serious for us as it might have been for Fr. Alberione.  No one can take your place- you'd better believe it!

ADVENT WEEKDAY
Gen 49: 2, 8-10
Mt 1: 1-7

Every priest encounters two judgments: that of man and that of God.  Fro the latter, which is the only one that counts, I beg everyone in time to obtain the mercy of the Lord for me (UPS 1/374).

From Father Tom:  Too often our concern is with the judgment on our activities of our contemporaries--or perhaps our judgment on theirs.  How wasteful!  Judgments add nothing to the reality (which is what God looks at).

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Zep 3: 14-17
Phil 4: 4-7
Lk 3: 10-18

Promotion/communication is the great problem of the Press apostolate.  It can be seen as the channel linking the truth in the apostle to the souls reached (1255).

From Father Tom: And when we use the other media and reach people automatically... is that enough?  No.  We've repeated the same idea many times: just reaching people is never enough.  In this case also the soul of the apostle must be filled with truth.

ADVENT WEEKDAY
Sir 48: 1-4, 9-11
Mt. 17: 10-13

Supposed you did a well and find excellent water.  Very good.  But the water in the well slakes no one's thirst.  Digging was good and needful but now you have to get the water to where it is needed (VMC 1253).

From Father Tom: The Founder then goes on to say that the Redemption was like digging the well but it depends on us to make the Redemption a reality.  Nothing new in that theory, but do I have to underline the need for slaking the thirst of those who don't even feel thirsty?

Bookd are produced in enormous numbers by the various publishers but what counts is to reach the readers, to reach souls (VMC 1252).

From Father Tom: Well, yes, we've (got) to reach them, but...reaching them is not enough.  If that were the case we could say that all those who read good books were converted.  Instead, tehy are, perhaps, impressed, but only when we add our prayer and sacrifice can they be said to have changed.

When a soul abounds in prayer, God abounds in grace, making the soul experience that the yoke of God is easy and His burden light (BM 493).

From Father Tom: Two comments:  a) the burden my be light mentally, but yet painful physically:  we bear sufferings with a sense of being loved by God;  b) "abounding in prayer" just be matched by action and especially sharing the good news of the HFI.  We are prayerful people, perhaps, but not contemplatives!

Purity and humility attract the graces of God Who judges according to the truth and not according to worldly principles (BM 285).

From Father Tom: Purity and humility?  Are these typical qualities of our modern world?  Or has it ever had less of them?  The state of our age in this connection is truly abominable.  No wonder the suffering of so many innocent people has never been so great.

Don't worry if 99% of our efforts falls uselessly on the ground.  Whatever falls on fertile soil compensates for what does not.  Our job is to pray, pray and sow the seed tirelessly...something will fructify and souls with reach Heaven. The only mistake is not to sow..."

From Father Tom: That seems to say it all.  But...let's be active in spreading the good news about the Institute.  Most times our efforts fall on stony ground. Why worry?  Have we the latest flyers, CD's, DVD?  If not, why not?  Article 36 is, in a way, more important than others.

Vive voce preaching has its advantages--it influences us more quickly. Our apostolate requires time to absorb but for that reason it tends to remain (VMC 1224).

From Father Tom:es, but neither word of mouth message or word on paper or in the movies or anywhere else will remain fruitfully if it is not sustained by prayer and sacrifice.

Prayer is a Gift

Prayer is a Gift

Prayer is best thought of as a gift of our faith, rather than a requirement of it. We will all experience loss, even abandonment, at some point in our lives. But we know that God is there, waiting to help us make sense of it all, to come through the fire better and stronger than we were before.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
First Sunday of the month--the Divine Master, Way, Truth and Life

1 Thess. 3: 12-4

Let us prepare for the Christmas festivities but also for the end of the year and the end of our lives (BM p. 528).

From Father Tom: A gloomy?  Why should it be? Whatever about the Christmas "festivities" (very limited in our day and age), we can rely on the Master to give us the Christmas to end all Christmases when we come into His presence...

Feast of St. Andrew and Novena

Happy Feast of St. Andrew, everyone!know about the Novena that begins today and continues on through Christmas day, but I am posting it here in case someone needs it and wants to participate. We have so much to
 pray for.

NOVENA TO SAINT ANDREW
Hail and blessed be the hour and moment
in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary,
at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold.
In that hour, vouchsafe, O my God!
to hear my prayer and grant my desires,
through the merits of Our Saviour Jesus Christ,
and of His Blessed Mother.

Amen.

(It is piously believed that whoever recites the above prayer fifteen times a day
from the feast of St. Andrew, on November 30th, until Christmas will obtain what is asked.)

[Imprimatur: +MICHAEL AUGUSTINE, Archbishop of New York, New York, February 6, 1897.] (from: catholicdoors.com)

Papal Intentions December 2012

December is the month dedicated to the Immaculate Conception

Below are the Holy Father's intentions for the month.

December 2012

General Intention: That migrants throughout the world may be welcomed with generosity and authentic love, especially by Christian communities.

Missionary Intention: Christ, light for all humanity. That Christ may reveal himself to all humanity with the light that shines forth from Bethlehem and is reflected in the face of his Church.  (~EWTN)

Saturday, December 1
OF THE DAY
First Saturday of the Month--Mary, Queen of Apostles
Rev. 22: 1-7
Lk 21: 34-36

MONTHLY INTENTION

That the word of God may inspire the search for the true common good and respect for the dignity of every person and help them to acknowledge the presence of God in all that is done to make the world more just and livable.

From Father Tom: The problem with today's world is not only lack of justice but lack of commons sense: women bearing children without every having seen the man who has donated his sperm.  In an April NEWSWEEK, the same individual is said to have "fathered" 1000 children!  God have mercy on us!

Blessed is he who sows everywhere what is true and good (BM 431).

From Father Tom:  Everywhere?  Perhaps not.  We, too, spread cockle among the wheat.  But, shall we say: "in most places and with most people." For that we thank God and ask His pardon for the rest.

Please Pray for Our Deceased:  Fr. Carlo Staurenghi IJP (1988)-- Bro Miguel Alfaro SSP (1996)-- Sr. M. Elvira Benedetti FSP (2003)-- Sr. Michael Sisko FSP (2007)-- Pasqualina Barone HFI (2010)-- Mike-- Fr. John Zieman OSB (no years given)

Rev 4: 1-11

In the temple, Mary surpassed the angels in love and sanctity (BM 361).

From Father Tom: In fact we see Our Lady as being superior in holiness to the angels and all the holy people that have existed or will exist.  So our trust in her power must be absolute.

Please Pray for Our Deceased:  The names were a little confused in the booklet with names and dates all topsy turvy, so I just ask you to please pray for our deceased priests, brothers, sisters, clerics, HFI, Gabriellites, Annunciationists, Cooperators, and family and friends who died on this day.

From Father Tom: Blessed Alberione was certainly no sacred singer...but in terms of prayer he must hold the record in the history of the Church.  This was surely a unique grace, but the rest of us can try to spend some time there.  Or in prayer in our homes.  All that TV viewing will not go with us usefully into eternity.

From Father Tom: "Detachment"...great to talk or write about but sometimes we have developed certain tastes or habits and the idea of renouncing is devastating. Can we?  Well, let's begin...abd lets begin again, and again, and again...And let's PRAY!

We lose time when we don't work for heaven, but only for the present: honors, earthly profits (BM 41).

From Father Tom:  Applies also to what we call "apostolate".  It is NOT necessary to be known or praised or admired for our "great work."  The greatest work...has to be left behind at death.  So what about not wasting any more time?

For the Suffering Souls in Purgatory

During the month of November, please pray for the souls in Purgatory in a special way.  Here's one of many prayers you might consider saying.

God bless...

An Heroic Act of Love

My God, for Your greater glory, in union with Jesus and Mary, I offer and surrender the satisfactory value of all the good I will do and all the suffrages I will receive after my death for the holy souls in Purgatory.  Dispose of everything according to Your Divine Will.  Amen

Perfect charity is supernatural (sees Christ in our neighbor), is universal (makes no distinctions between people, generous (without limits), and active (shows itself through deeds).

From Father Tom: Well...how's that for an examination of conscience?!  I'm going to turn the page quickly and see is there something less onerous tomorrow!

The priest is the mediator between heaven and earth: to heaven he presents the needs of humanity, from heaven he obtains graces and mercies (BM 486).

From Father Tom: Perhaps we priests don't think enough of our role in God's plan and spend too much time worrying about our problems instead of making people's problems our own and asking God to help those we pray for.

From Father Tom: Perhaps our Founder means:  "he doesn't want to understand it." None so blind as those who refuse to see.  And are we not all in need of the divine Oculist?  Do I see things now as I did ten years ago? Am I still blind in one eye..."

November 2012 Papal Intentions

I found the image on the internet, (http://hicatholicmom.blogspot.com/)but will gladly give credit.

November 2012

General Intention: Ministers of the Gospel. That bishops, priests, and all ministers of the Gospel may bear the courageous witness of fidelity to the crucified and risen Lord.

Missionary Intention: Pilgrim Church. That the pilgrim Church on earth may shine as a light to the nations.

November 1, 2012 With Blessed Father Alberione and with Father Tom

Thursday, November 1
ALL SAINTS
First Thursday of the month--the Angel Guardians
Rev. 7: 2-4, 9-14
1 Jn 3: 1-3
Mt 5: 1-12

MONTHLY INTENTION

That priesthood candidates and candidates to the consecrated life may love the word of God, make it a part of their stages of formation, learn to understand it, live it and announce it.

From Father Tom: The Bible--once described as "the best-seller that nobody reads" --is a vital part of our Pauline life, but it needs footnotes or a good commentary to ensure we understand it.  At least let's make St. Paul essential reading!

Having faith means that the light of God becomes our light, the wisdom of God becomes our wisdom:  His mind is our mind and His wisdom our wisdom (BM 195).

True... as long as we are talking about faith and not simply knowing  or guessing or surmising. Do we believe in the Eucharist as the Body and Blood of Christ?  Judging by their attitude, lots of people just know  if even that.).  And too many don't seem to care.

From Father Tom: How am I doing on this point?  How are you?  Unless we live in the Sahara desert we are always impressing someone, favorably or unfavorably. It is an aspect of our exam that we don't always remember.

Prayer is recommended more than 500 times in Sacred Scripture (VMC 1130).

My Comment (as per Fr. Tom): Sometimes it's hard to remember that it isn't the amount of prayer or the length of prayer, but the focus and attention we give to it that is important.  It is a conversation between us and God. We must talk to, not at, God and then try to listen to His response.

Apostolate is the flower of a true charity towards God and souls, fruit of an intense interior life, sign of a burning heart that cannot compress the internal fire (VMC 1968).

From Father Tom: How does this definition apply to me?  And to you?

OF THE DAY
Gal 1: 6-12
Lk 10: 25-37

Some religious groups cease to exist because they have not done their work well and the Lord gives it to others who will do it better. And if we don't do our duties well the master can find others (VMC 1065).

From Father Tom:  My thought exactly.  The future of the HFI depends on the HFI...if we live the rule to the full, it will not matter who the eventual Delegate is.

Please Pray for Our Deceased:  Sr. Attilia Trevisani FSP (1943)-- Sr. Terezinha Lopes SGBP (1995)-- Domenico Nardis HFI (1998)-- Arthur Mulingan (1999)
