The Anointing of the Sick is called the Sacrament of Hope. It infuses consolation and patience to bring about detachment from life and from the goods of the earth (BM 479).

From Father Tom: That was true when this anointing was truly the sign that life was over. Today it may simply be one more good moment--given every time there is a new illness or a new aspect of the illness we can lose our sense of exactly what is going on.
