Prayers for the
Suffering Souls in November
One of Father Tom Fogarty’s many spiritual gifts to me as a member
of the Holy Family Institute, and Pauline family, was the instilling of a great
love and devotion for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Although I know they are blessed because they
are assured their place in Heaven, it saddens me to think of them as suffering
so much in reparation for debts not fully paid to the Divine Majesty. I want very much to help them, family,
friend, and even those I don’t know or count as friend—as I’m sure all of you
do. Normally I say the Heroic Act of
Love (p. 142 of the Prayers of the
Pauline Family) at least once a day, and the Eternal Rest prayer
several times a day, in addition to the chaplet for the Holy Souls, the first
Tuesday of each month (pp 138-142 of the Prayers
of the Pauline Family). But wouldn’t it be nice to do more? November is
almost upon us, and that gives me, and anyone else who might like to help the
Holy Souls a chance to do just that.
What can we do?
1. Say
the Chaplet for the Holy Souls in Purgatory every day during the month of
November
2. Say
a rosary each day for the Holy Souls (“The Rosary for the Holy Souls in
Purgatory” by Susan Tassone is a good resource for this.)
3. Read
“Day by Day” for the Holy Souls in Purgatory 365 Reflections by Susan Tassone (This
is divided days so you can do the reflections for November only if you wish.)
4. Visit
a cemetery and pray for the dead
5. Have
Masses said for the Holy Souls
6. Pray
the Novena for the Holy Souls (Yes, the time is finished for the actual Novena
leading to All Souls day, but it can be prayed any time and is a lovely
prayer.)
7. Ask
the poor souls to help you and your loved ones
8. Offer
up your sufferings, joys, works, and actions for their liberation
9. Pray
for the Holy Souls as your intention during your Visit or Adoration
These are just a few of the many ways in which we can honor
and pray for the poor souls. Even doing one or two during the month of November
(and hopefully beyond) will provide welcome relief and maybe hasten the release of
one or more poor souls. Please consider joining
me during this month of November to render assistance to our loved ones,
friends, relatives, acquaintances and those unknown or in most need in
purgatory. They will never forget our
act of love and charity.
God bless, in Jesus Master, through Mary Queen of Apostles
and St. Paul
