When there are not Saints, people don't know how to live Christianity because they tend to read the Gospel more easily in the lives of the Saints than if they read the sacred text (VMC 975).
From Father Tom: This brings us again to the power--for good or evil-- of example. The Saints did not set out to show off their virtues but, inevitably, their lives had that effect and people learn ed from them more than from reading about virtue.
