Wednesday, May 1
EASTER WEEKDAY
First Wednesday in the month--St. Joseph
Acts 15, 1-6
Jn 15: 1-8
With Mary, the Mother of Jesus and the Queen of Apostles, let us ask the Holy Spirit to lead us to a deeper knowledge of the work of God and guide us to share it more and more widely through the increased possibilities offered by modern media.
From Father Tom: Agreed. But first let us first cultivate a "humble and contrite heart." In the Pauline Family each branch has a special apostolate. The HFI has the apostolate of family harmony and the many challenges this involves.
Please Pray for Our Deceased: Angela Losito HFI (1994)--Alfred Edlmair, Gabrielite (1998)--Fr. Pasqualie Cassillo SSP (2001)-- Sr. M. Gabriella Munoz FSP (2008)--Sr. Mauriia Sartorado FSP (2009)-- Elizabeth Marie Beattie (2001)--Ella Friloux--John Stevens (no years).

EASTER WEEKDAY
Acts 19, 19-28
Jn 14: 27-31
Avaricious people become attached to the goods of the earth and simply ignore any question of loving God or searching for Him (BM 641).
From Father Tom: Avaricious in this sense we are not but in some probably all but the great Saints are. Our human nature reaches automatically for all the goodies around us and has to make a real effort to think of an alternative.
Please Pray for Our Deceased: Sr. M Tecla Cutrini FSP (1960)--Fr. Ugo Antonucci IJP (1991)-- Sr. M. Salvina Pipus FSP (2008)-- Jessus Valdes (1987)--Emilio A. Mamaril (2009).

CATHERINE OF SIENA, Virgin, Doctor
Acts 14, 5-18
Jn 14: 21-26
Ask for the grace to do the will of God and let this be the central request of every prayer. (RSP 135).
From Father Tom: What else is valuable except the will of God? It is identified with God Himself-- He has no "parts"-and so is for our maximum benefit. "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven."

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Acts 14: 21-27
Rv 21: 1-5
Jn 13: 31-35
The sign of sanctity will always be humility. Holiness leads us to search for the glory of God. The proud person seeks his own glory (RSP p. 120).
From Father Tom: Pride is also the sign of a defective self-image. When we are content with what we are, we lead a tranquil life. When we are not content, the search for human approval becomes pathological and all talk of God goes out the window.

Jn 14: 44-52
Some people have strange fantasies about life. Spend it well. Life is for heaven.
From Father Tom: As we said already: not two lives, but two parts of the same life. We posses Jesus here, we possess and enjoy Him "there".

Jesus requires the pardoning of offences and states openly that God does not accept the offering of a vindictive heart (BM 623/4).
From Father Tom: Well, that puts it very clearly and, fortunately, none of us has a vindictive heart, but we may have a brooding heart and that requires the Divine Cardiologist!

Mk 16: 15-20
The person who lives well and at the same time teaches well deserves a double reward. (SP Jan51).
From Father Tom: The two aspects are not just important, but essential, especially the first one. Living well can be a living sermon for those who k now us. Teaching well? Yes, but it must be backed up by living well.

Obedience works miracles. When God sends us, He does not send us alone, but accompanies us with His grace (RSP 571).
From Father Tom: So our strategy then must be "work hard and pray even harder." Results? The first Result is God and all He promises. Every other result is secondary and may even be invisible here and now. So... let's do what we're asked and forget about everything else.

Let us feel ourselves like St. Paul and St. Paul, with the duty of evangelizing those we contact even with a good word (SP March 1951)
From Father Tom: St. Paul feels he is a "debtor" to all or, in otehr words, that he must share with everyone the amazing gift he has received. All of us have also received the gift of a new spirituality and have had our minds open to new and exciting possibilities. Now we mus SHARE.

Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, formed the first Apostles and they became strong, profound theologians, full of zeal (BM 312).
From Father Tom: The most remarkable aspect of these first preachers of the Gospel was their grasp of theology: from unlettered Galilean fishermen them became sources of spiritual wisdom and learning. God can make us what He likes. Why not ask Him to make us truly useful in the HFI?

We know by experience how inconstant we are. We need to lea(r)n or Jesus, pray and groan, mistrust ourselves and confide in Him (BM 165).
From Father Tom: That seems so simple except that we don't easily get to the "pray and groan" stage and it we do it's likely to be about our health or business. It is not easy to be really concerned about the spirit in the very unspiritual modern world.

St. Thomas the Apostle truly believed when he touched the wounds of Jesus. Blessed are we if we believe, if we truly believe (PDDM 89, 90).
From Father Tom: And to get to that stage, we will normally have to experience the wounds of our own sins and defects and realize that we need the Risen Lord to heal us.

Mk 16: 9-15
God counts on me. He wants my words and works to extend His kingdom (BM 270).
From Father Tom: It isn't difficult to believe this? We have heard it so often that it just doesn't sink in. No one can take your place, use your talents, do your work. If you fail on this point...the Church will be different and not so complete!
Please Pray for Our Deceased: Sr. M. Francisca Saveria Anton PD (1967)-- Sr. Bernardina Spadaccini FSP (1970)-- Fr. Francesco Zecchinati SSP (1994)-- Sr. Stefanina Lonardoni FSP (2003)-- Sr. Teresa M. Musso FSP (2004)-- Sr. M. Assunta Vadacherry FSP (2005)-- Sr. M. Rossaura Ravera PD (2005)-- Anna Butani

First Friday of the month--the Sacred Heart
Acts 4: 1-2
Jn 21: 1-14
The law of God, vocation and the will of God are superior to human dispositions (BM 293).
From Father Tom: A consoling thought: WE may be inferior to whatever challenge but as long as we TRY, MAKE A MOVE, DO OUR BEST, we can--so to speak--untie the Lord's hands to help us.

WITHIN THE EASTER OCTAVE
First Wednesday of the month--St. Joseph
Acts 3: 1-10
Lk 24: 13-35
St. Thomas the Apostle truly believed when he touched the wounds of Jesus. Blessed are we if we believe, if we truly believe (PDDM 89, 90).

WITHIN THE EASTER OCTAVE
First Tuesday of the month--the Souls in Purgatory
Acts 2: 36-41
Jn 20: 11-18
Our life must be a continuous renewal, a continuous conversion, a continuous resurrection (BM 446/7).
From Father Tom: This in fact is how the life of our bodies behaves: continuous destruction or wearing of one or more of its parts and continuous renewal. The difference is that eventually the body fails to renew and dies--and then the soul begins to live fully.
Please Pray for Our Deceased: Sr. Marina Merz FSP FSP (1963)-- Fr. Salvatore Sallemi IJP (3006)-- Sr.M. Andioletta Manduchi PD (2010)
