A frightening situation is the situation of a society where the individuals have lost their consciences (BM 95).

From Father Tom: Fr. Alberione probably had the spiritual situation of such a society in mind but the spiritual and the material are intertwined, like it or not.  too many of today's societies are in precisely this situation.
