Mortification is a renouncement, a detachment, an inner death, and at the same time a victory, an elevation, a new life, a true sanctification (BM 252-253)

From Father Tom:  Very true, but we know that he practice of mortification is as Shakespeare would say "more honored in the breach than in the observance," and that is why we have to be grateful for occasional reversals, ill health especially.
