Updating consists in reliving the spirit of the Founder and the principles and rules of the Constitutions, taking into account how to live them in modern circumstances (SP Nov. 1950).
This sage advice was widespread after Vatican Council 2, but history shows that it was misread and misapplied. The wreckage of this process we see all around us while those who are trying to bring about real renewal are seen as failing to move with the times.
