Before we placed the Institute under the protection of Saint Paul the Apostles, we have prayed much. We wanted a Saint who excelled in sanctity and at the same time was an example of apostolate. Saint Paul has combined in himself sanctity and apostolate )(Pensieri 55).

From Father Tom: An interesting insight here on the early days. Alberione received considerable Divine help but not when he himself had the awareness to make the decisions. Actually there were several models he might have followed--St. John Chrysostom, for example, was a famous preacher and there were others. But ptobably the outspoken love of Paul for Jesus was the deciding factor and doubtless especially his hymn to charity.
